         <title>Mentors</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Odysseus had three mentors, Athena, Circe, and Tiresias. In the Cyclops, Athena sent in all of Polyphemus' sheep. Odysseus says that "by some sheepherding whim—or a god’s bidding—none were left outside"(Homer Lines 287-288). He prayed to the gods and Athena helped him.<br><br>Circe helps him in The Sirens, where she "foresaw for [them] and shared with [him], so...[they] die with [their] eyes open" (Homer Lines 687-689). She gives them insight on what's to come giving him time to plan.<br><br>Tiresias helps Odysseus in the Land of the Dead. She tells him what is going to happen and what to expect. He tells Odysseus that he will make it home but he will find "insolent men eating [his] livestock as they court [his] lady"(Homer Lines 649-650). He also tells him his men will die before returning to Ithaca.</div>]]></description>

The Phaecians are allies of Odysseus because they "[offer] a ship to Odysseus" so that he can get home(Homer).<br><br>Telemachus is an ally because he&nbsp;<br>"belted his sword on, clapped hand to his spear, and... stood by his chair, in the forefront near his father"(Homer Lines 1403-1405).<br><br>Eumaeus is an ally because Odysseus was "Aided by Athena... Telemachus, Eumaeus, and other faithful herdsmen [to] kill all the suitors"(Homer).</div>]]></description>

The greek value of hospitality was violated because the Antinous had "hit the man’s right shoulder" previously in the story(Homer Line 1228). In the end, Odysseus killed all the suitors.</div>]]></description>

Athena was the goddess that convinced Odysseus to go to fight in the Trojan War due to his intelligence and leadership skills. These were tested in Sailing from Troy.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In The Cyclops, Odysseus and his men come upon an island and find large amounts of whey and cheese. Odysseus upholds the value of hospitality by bringing a bottle of "sweet liquor" for anyone they come across. In this episode, Athena brings all of the sheep inside after Polyphemus traps Odysseus and his men. They escape via sheep and as they are sailing away odysseus tells the Cyclops "if ever mortal man inquire how [he was] put to shame and blinded, tell [them]<br>Odysseus, raider of cities"(Homer Lines 457-460). This violates the value of excessive pride because he is being arrogant by telling his name to Polyphemus. </div>]]></description>

This ends up working due to the fact that they listened to Circe's instrucions.</div>]]></description>
