This caused coastal flooding as it is an island in the middle pacific ocean and sea levels rising would cause the island to be prone to coastal flooding

Edit : given that land elevation is low (12.6 and 77.4 % <2 m at Bairiki and Eita ) Tarawa experiences constant floods as it is surrounded by a large water body ( the Pacific Ocean) and does not have any coastal islands to block any incoming waves headed towards the island

In 2013, a devastating natural disaster occurred when the Danube river flooded.
The floods resulted in 25 deaths in all of Europe. There was an overall insurance loss of 16 billion US dollars.
It is nearby the Danube river, which can overflow and cause a flood. Budapest is also prone to high amounts of rainfall, which in turn could cause and did cause the Danube river to overflow and flood the surrounding areas.

In 2010 16 June, Orchard road had a flash flood. There was a heavy rainfall lasting for 2 hours and one of the 2 channels in the drainage system was clogged. This prevented the rainwater from draining out and therefore flooding the street. Because of the floods, shopping malls along orchard roads such as the Liat tower were affected and got damaged by the flood. I feel that the drainage system being clogged was the cause of the flood as normally, heavy rains would be drained by the drains located beside roads and buildings. However, the drain being clogged caused rainwater to be trapped on the surface and causing water to accumulate there, causing a flash flood.

The flash flood happened on 16 June 2010. About 4 inches (100 millimetres) of rain fell for 2 hours, which was equivalent to around 60 percent of the average monthly rainfall of June in 2010. Shopping malls along Orchard road such as Liat Towers were affected by the flood. The flood had caused these shopping malls and car park basements to be submerged in water. This is because a second rainstorm on the same morning came, the Stamford Canal as one of the two channels were choked with debris, is unable to drain off excess water, overflowed and gushed water up to the surface and caused the flooding.

Tarawa’s factor of flooding is their height above sea level. The island is surrounded by an ocean and is Low-lying. The island is on average, less than 2 metres above sea level hence making it very prone to flooding when the sea level rises.

This flood has caused people who are travelling or working to be hindered by the knee/shin high waters. This can be seen based on the cars and buses trapped or stuck in the flood. The people working in the offices and buildings nearby also has to stop work as the water would have seeped into the buildings / shophouses one way or another. This will cause people to be late for work or a loss of income for some people (bus drivers/taxi drivers). The repair work needed to repair the damaged buildings or vehicles would cost quite a big sum also. ~ Hong Ann
