I did the deconstructing word questions. At first I showed all the blue information and the red questions together. This confused the children so I changed to show them one bit of information at a time with all the questions and this worked better. Lots of great conversations from the children. 

 

I gave the children A3 copies of the sheet and cut up the information and questions for the children to match. First they looked at the who and the what for the problem and wrote this down. Then they looked at the information and then matched the questions to the information. Some did just look at the names and worked out that they match. Next time I will not put the name in the question. I did ask them to explain how they know but not using the names in their explanation.

 

They did find it trick to understand that some questions can not be answered as we don't have enough information. But as we went through some examples their understanding improved. After matching all of  the information with the correct questions children answered the questions. 

 

This was the first time I did this with my class and they did very well I felt. They enjoyed it too. I planned 3 different questions but only managed to do one. My less able children found the whole task quite tricky. Working in mixed helped to support these children.
