The Yellow River is also known as the "cradle of Chinese civilization" or the "Mother River." It also has less-positive nicknames as well, such as "China's Sorrow" and "Scourge of the Han People." It is a source of rich fertile soil, irrigation water, and even used as a weapon. It was once a raging torrent but is now calm river. The loose soil deposited by the river from its passage across the plateau to the west provided rich and easily worked conditions. The monsoon, however, is unpredictable. The main crops that grow along these rivers was millet and rices

The Qin Ling Mountains north of the Yangtze divide northern and southern China. North of these mountains is the Yellow River valley. The land surrounding the Yellow River is buffeted by the cold, dry winds blowing east from the central Asian plains. The soil here is fertile, and early humans domesticated crops here as well, starting around 8000 BCE For centuries the Yellow River region was richer and more populated than the Yangtze River valley, despite the Yangtze's warmer climate; the Yangtze gained prominence starting in the Han Dynasty between 202 BCE and 220 CE
