The pocket watch is a symbol of heritage, as it was an heirloom passed down for his father to his grandfather and then to him. The pocket watch was gold and small and held a lot of value. Della is then shown searching for a worthy gift for her husband and came across a silver chain to pair it's self with the watch. Which leads to her selling her hair.
Della then goes home to show Jim the chain and asks for his watch so she could put it on. Only to find out that Jim has sold his watch to buy Della a beautiful set of combs. Here the watch is then presented as a symbol of sacrifice; Jim had sold it to buy Della the combs.
