If we care too much, we can't survive a student dropping out, a student passing away, a student's internal struggles. If we care too little, we're no longer effective. The balance is hard, and here at Hart we do seem to care a lot and that's great. But indeed I do have a few students who are failing. I guess I assumed they would have a net to catch them. Hart is no comparison to MOST schools in CA which are filled with at-risk students with hard working single parents who have enormous amounts of struggle in comparison. The staff members tend to have FAR more pressure and fatigue in terms of emotional and behavioral issues that impact teacher and staff productivity which makes it harder to have all the supports in place that kids need. We HAVE the resources at Hart. We HAVE a staff that is not overwhelmed.
