With my fiance being a feminist, I feel as though I get a unique perspective to how gender intersects with the music that I listen to regularly. She has helped me realize how sexist some of the music I listen to is, and helped me also pick up on lyrics that are degrading to women and objectify them. Most of this music that does this that I listen to is rap music. She has pointed out that in the way the rappers brag about their success and masculinity in a way puts down women and objectifies them by bragging about the women they sleep with and talking about them in derogatory statements. She also shows me how covers of the albums of many artists objectifies women by having them pose with little clothing. I see how masculinity plays a huge role in music as well as a lot of the music I listen to involves the artist bragging about his life and achievements. They also brag in rap music a lot about hurting or killing those who mess with them which is also said to boost how masculine you see that artist is. In my opinion, this perpetuates the over masculine male american culture that is a problem today in society.

I chose this image to represent the problem of masculinity in today's music. While masculinity has always been a problem for American males, I personally feel like it has become a increasingly worse problem over the decades. I feel like rap music and pop music have been becoming increasingly more about bragging about how bad to the bone they are and that artists themselves have been completely wrapped up in trying to make their audiences think they are gangster or troubled when they really have no history of such and their machoness is purely an image to sell their music. Kids don't realize this however and end up trying to become like their idol, causing more problems in society than the music helps.

The image I have included below is another example of the objectification of women. The man below is the rapper Nelly, who is biting on the bikini bottoms of a female. The unnecessary sexualization of women by artists such as what is shown in this image is a cultural problem in society today that is not only limited to music. While it was not created by music, the sexualization of women by the music industry certainly does not do anything to stop this practice, nor does it help women achieve equality in today's society. I see this problem is primarily confined to both rap and pop music, two of the biggest music genres that today's youth listens to.

This video is a perfect example of the sexualization of women in music videos. It also shows that it happens across all genres and is not just a problem with rap music. There is a problem in American music culture that involves almost every genre objectifying women to appeal to audiences and make the singer look cool or masculine. Music videos such as the ones included in this video only hinder gender equality for women and perpetuate the objectification of women as influencible youth watch the artists that they idolize objectify women themselves. Men in music are hardly sexualized nearly as often as women are sexualized in music.

I have included the music video of the song LOYALTY by Kendrick Lamar to show the prevalence of masculinity in music and music videos. Through about half of the video you see kendrick lamar fight a man and beat the man unconscious then spit on his passed out body. This is a very clear display of his masculinity and is a very negative thing to teach influencible kids. He shows that you should fight to show your machoness and that fighting is a sign of one's masculinity. This negative influence only furthers the American macho man culture and promotes using violence to make yourself look cool or impress women like he does in the video.
