The Polynesians brought surfing to Hawaii where the sports was seen religiously. The process of shaping the wooden surf boards included rituals to serve protection and god’s goodwill

Up until around the mid 1900’s surfboards were simply made of wood, carved from wood found on pacific islands, for example redwood and Koa. 
Making surfboards lighter meant that surfers could ride waves faster than ever before. This was introduced when Tom Blake created the first hollow board. 
In 1967 the short board revolution began, starting when Pete Peterson introduced the revolutionary fiberglass board, a shorter and even faster board made from foam and coated with fiberglass.
Back to the present there are many different types of board, ranging from epoxy resin to 100% carbon technology. Even the shape of boards is continuously being experimented with

In 1959 Duke became the State of Hawaii Ambassador of Aloha due to all of his success.
