Eng III Period 1 | Independent Learning Reflection by Christina Zacharias

Read "She Didn’t Teach. We Had to Learn it Ourselves" by Maryellen Weimer. (1) Name 5 pros about teachers making students figure things out for themselves. (2) Why is it important for students to start becoming independent learners in high school and stop relying so heavily on their teachers (Ex: Relying on teachers to repeat announcements that are already posted to Blackboard, relying on teachers to repeat directions, read to students, and look up definitions for students, etc.)? (3) What do you think college professors will expect from their students in the future? Will they allow disruptions in class, constant late work, and irrelevant excuses? (4) Reflect on the job of a teacher. Is a teacher's job to spoon feed students ALL of the subject matter material, OR is to equip students with the skills to learn on their own?

1. They become independent, start to think for themselves, learn how to solve problems, start searching their own answer and work harder to solve the questions.
2. Because in the future they will have to do all the hings by themselves and they have to start learning that if they want to solve a problem they have to work hard and find a solution.
3. A) They will expect a student with own-initiative and with desire to learn new things. A student who can think of great ideas by himself.
B) They will expect a responsible student who does all the work on time. They will not accept late work and all these stuff.
4. A teacher has to teach a student how to solve problems by himself, how to think in a critical way, how t solve problems... A teacher has to teach skills that will help that student in the future.

1. They learn to do things independently., recognize what is wrong and what is right, find the answer themselves, learning will be easier and helps their developmental process.
2. It is important for student to start becoming independent to get ready for college and their work career. They need to do things on their own and need to know how to do it.
3. College professors will expect their student to do what they need to do without telling them over and over again. They expect you to teach yourself something you do not understand. They want to see you grow on your own and deal with life problems for "real life".
4. A teacher job is to teach their students and get them ready for college. They want to teach them self-disciple and independence. They don't need to watch over you like a parents, that is not their job.

No, I do not feel that it is a teachers job to spoon feed all of their students, but it is important for students to be able to speak their minds and ask questions on subjects they are unsure about, as it should be the teachers job to be able to answer it or explain it in greater detail.

1.) The first thing this teaches is is that we can figure things out on our own. It teaches us to learn to solve problems on our own. We also are applying ourselves more. This also helps our brains to function on a higher level because we are doing most of the work. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to research. Finally our teacher is not always going to be there and we need to learn how to do things on our own.
2. It's important because in college our professors aren't always going to be the same.
3.) They are supposed to guide us in the proper direction so that we can eventually become independent students.

It is important for students to acquire these skills because they are essential for college life. If you cannot complete tasks on your own, you will be in a hard place. They should not have to hear excuses, deal with classroom disruption, or accept late work. That is the students responsibility.
4. The job of a teacher is to enable the student to learn, at least. They do not have to hand out all of the information necessary for the course. The goal of school is to educate students, but that job is not laid on the shoulders of only one person. The job of education should be carried out by the teacher and the student in a respectful and mutually enlightening relationship.
