In researching potential social media platforms, I wanted to find applications that seamlessly integrate with our college's learning management system (Canvas). It is beneficial for students to have one central location that they can rely on for all course information. In doing so, I believe the adoption rate of the various applications will increase.

These applications all have a common goal of increasing student engagement and collaboration. Some of the applications researched I have used before, while others I have not.

www.turning.com

Overview: turning has several products that are designed to increase student engagement, but I will focus on their TurningPoint app here. TurningPoint is an app that turns presentations, lectures or online meetings into interactive sessions by getting instant feedback from the audience through polling or quizzes. I have used this app to create a quiz that replicates Jeopardy the students really enjoy.

Pros: Easily integrates with Powerpoint, Allows introverts to participate, Real-time quizzes give students instant feedback on answers.

Cons: Requires the audience members to have a web-enabled device.

www.voicethread.com

Overview: This application allows an individual to post information to a site the class has access to, where students and instructors can then make comments using a variety of methods. This can be done asynchronously, at the convenience of the student and instructor. This can be a useful app for giving students feedback that is explained verbally.

Pros: The presenter can record information one slide/page at a time. Mistakes can be corrected without having to redo the entire recording. VT is also very flexible. Any type of document (.mp4, .pptx, .doc, .pdf, etc.) can be uploaded and the comments can be handwritten, recorded, or typed.

Cons: If you like using Powerpoint with animations, VT only uploads the slide as static. If you want to only show one bullet at a time, you have to upload individual slides.

www.youtube.com

Overview: Probably the least collaborative tool I researched, but one that I use very often in my classes. Their enormous library ensures you can find a video on any topic you are teaching in class that may help the students understand the material more clearly. I use it to find humorous videos related to the topic I'm teaching that day to grab the students attention before we start the discussion.

Pros: Enormous library, Easy to search, Easy to imbed in presentations.

Cons: Not really a collaborative tool as the students are passive as they watch.

www.perusall.com

Overview: This app takes the solitary experience of reading class material and changes it to a collaborative experience. The goal is to increase the # of students who do the assigned reading before class and enrich their learning experience when doing so. Students can read through texts, cases, articles, etc. online in the Perusall app and highlight passages, write questions, make comments, etc. that other students can see and respond to.

Pros: Instructors can easily track student participation, as well as see what material the students are stuck on. The app is also very intuitive and does not require the instructor to put forth much effort in setting it up. Students can see answers to questions they may have.

Cons: If you don't assign any readings, this app is of no purpose.

Very similar to Perusall, but for videos! Instructors can post videos or recorded lectures in the Annoto interface, and students can add comments, write questions, etc. about the content.

Pros: Students also have the ability to add private notes, so they don't need to handwrite them, or keep them separately in a word document.

Cons: If there is no video content in your course, this app is of no purpose.
