We've added additional elementary enrichment teams in the last three years and enrollment numbers seem to be holding in elementary as well as visual art (K-12), Music performances in-person have been taking place again (finally), We have a caring and compassionate arts education team that wants to help grow every child in their artistic field of expertise!

People think that art, music, theater, and dance are just "extras" and anyone can teach these subjects. I see advocacy as a tool to dispel this myth by being proactive rather than reactive. (Sorry this is actually two but I also don't think people understand the amount of personal - beyond the classroom - time that arts educators devote to their students for little or no compensation.)

We definitely want to increase enrollment numbers in band/choir at the secondary level post-pandemic (critical) in order to avoid program demise and I hope we can continue to work on ensuring that students are receiving the same opportunity and support to be successful in the arts no matter their school or feeder pattern. One way to achieve this is ensuring we have common and consistent student skills as well as curriculum/pacing understanding across all levels.

Although I don't have an arts program, three things that are going well in my new position is:
The transition has been wonderful. I'm surrounded by support leaders and co-workers.
The work is fun, exciting and challenging.
The Advocacy Leadership Force is increasing in numbers!!!! :D

Advocacy work is more than demanding someone to do something for you. Music education advocacy is a journey with a variety people to uplift music education for all people. This can look like policy at the state and federal level. It can look like have parents attending performances at the school level. It looks like students taking the initiative to create their own music outside of the classroom and school setting. Advocacy contains a vast spectrum of opportunities for people to become involved.

Title IV Information

Within ESSA, is a flexible grant entitled Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grant, also known as Title IV, Part A. SSAE (Title IV, Part A) is authorized at $1.65 billion, but is currently funded at $1.1 Billion. These funds are available to all NC school districts based on a formula allotment

Any school district receiving more than $30,000 must complete a needs assessment that address expenditure of

•20% on safe and healthy school activities,

•20% on well-rounded education programs. The remaining

•60% of the allotted funding can be spent on all three buckets, with a 15% cap on technology devices, equipment, and software and digital content.

>$30,000: Needs Assessment requires input from various stakeholders including (but not limited to): Principals (all levels) School Counselors, Lead Teachers, Classroom Teachers, Enrichment/Fine Arts Teachers, AIG, Parents, Students Faith Based Community Members

<$30,000: The school district must spend the funds in one of the “buckets” with the 15% cap on technology

Three things that are going well in my program-
I am getting ready to start up my bucket drumming groups at my school.
I am also starting on musical plays for grades 1-3.
I have been working on teaching GarageBand to my students (k-5)

My students all have instruments in their hands, which has not always been the case.

I am extremely lucky to get to collaborate with both the choral and visual arts departments at both of my schools to create productions.

We staged our first play since 2019 in November and had a cast of 20 and crew of 12!

I have several seniors this year graduating with the hope of pursuing a career in theatre arts.

This year I am back in the Art Room with my students! Students have also been able to use art supplies again (as they weren't before due to Covid). I also feel supported at one of my current school locations.

I'd like to be a better advocate for both of my programs. It is overwhelming at times to pay equal attention to both programs. Next year I would like to take my schools to NCTC.

I would also like to improve my parent support base as far as volunteers and creating a booster program

I am working on building confidence in my students. I want all students to feel like they can make and do anything! So many of my students come to me feeling defeated before they even try.

People may assume that art isn't valuable in the short-term and long-term, when it's the opposite! I like to try to connect what I teach to other disciplines so that it's very visible how important art can be.

I'm always trying to teach at least 1 thing to 4 or more different instruments at once, repairing instruments, transposing, arranging, and that doesn't count "normal" teacher duties

People don't understand that I am not just a "babysitter". I have my students create using multiple steps and multiple artistic media. I also link activities to art history and cultures around the world. It is difficult when students get pulled or randomly dropped into my classes and miss major information and steps to activities.

I feel like a lot of people don't understand that you can't just put a kid in chorus mid-year, there is so much foundational knowledge and it's not setting them up for success to just stick them in a class where they'll already be behind.
