Taji Satrapi (Marji's mother)

Quote one:
- “Everywhere in the streets, there were demonstrations for and against the veil. At one of the demonstrations, a German journalist took a photo of my mother.” (5)

Explanation one:
- Early in the book, we learn Marji’s mother is involved in the revolution against the Shah’s regime. Later in the book, we learn that Taji (Marji’s mother) was against the veil. She’s an activist for the repeal of Shah as the leader, meaning she rebellious. a trait she passes down to Marji. The idea of Taji actively participating in the demonstrations is the author’s way of focusing on women’s rights. This is portrayed in the story through the author’s words that Taji is supposed to be the person in Marji’s life that shows her that Women have voices at a time where the population of citizens was mostly sexist towards the rights of women. Taji’s purpose is to teach Marji how to act and to construct a path for her future.

Quote two:
- "Across the street. They’re totally devoted to the new regime. A glimpse of what goes on in our homes would be enough for them to denounce us." (105)

Explanation two:
- This quote teaches us a lot about Taji and her part in being rebellious during the new regime. We knew that Taji went to a lot of protests before against the Shah, but now she is showing how she is disrespecting the laws of the new regime and trying to cover up her and her family's tracks. During this quote, Marji’s mother is covering up her windows with dark fabrics. The intended purpose of this is so that people can't look into their household. The reason for this is to try and keep the activities that go on in her house a secret from her devoted neighbor’s view. We learn that during this period of time, it’s what others think about you, not what you think about yourself. For example, earlier we see Marji being harassed by two older women because of what she’s wearing. In this case, they wouldn’t be just harassed for what they do inside their own house, they would be jailed, beaten, and maybe even killed. This allows Taji and her family to be free from the outside world without having to be punished for having fun.
Again well done

Eby Satrapi (Marji's father)

Quote one:
- “She took out the lining. Then she placed two posters behind it. And then she sewed the lining back in.” (128)

Explanation one:
- This passage in Persepolis shows Tagi, Marji’s mother, taking out the inner coating of Eby’s jacket and hiding contraband inside. This contraband is two posters that Marji had requested they bring home after her parent’s trip from Turkey. Taji then sewed up the lining from Eby’s jacket to smuggle the illegal posters through airport security. It’s one thing for someone to think of a plan and it’s another thing to execute it. That’s what Eby did (Marji’s father), the intended purpose was to go through security with two posters inside the fabric of his jacket to bring them home to his beloved daughter. This impacts Marji greatly as it shows her that her parents will go to great lengths just to make her happy. Many messages are being portrayed in this section of the story but the main one is probably to be brave and persevere to get the things you want. Although Eby didn’t necessarily want these posters, he wanted Marji to be loved and wanted to see her happy. So in a sense, the author wants to send the message of never-ending love from family is always with you no matter what.

Uncle Anoosh

Quote one:
- “We are going to free Iran province by province!!” (55)

Explanation one:
- This is first said by Uncle Anoosh after the start of the reign of the Shah. Anoosh was once the sub-leader of the Iran republic, then the Shah started to control all of Iran, the Shah’s view and Anoosh's views were different. The Shah then proceeds to try and execute everyone in the opposing position of him, meaning Uncle Anoosh and some of his friends. This caused Uncle Anoosh to rebel and try to get every man in Iran freedom, which was against the Shah’s ideals. The message portrayed by Uncle Anoosh in this text is to fight back for what you believe in since more often than not, you're going to be remembered as a hero. We know that because Anoosh was one of the first people to go against the Shah and we learned earlier in the story that many people also rebelled against the Shah, without Anoosh's ideas out in the world, people would have no idea about a brighter future. The purpose of Uncle Anoosh in the novel is to show an opposing side, and what happened to those kinds of rebels at the time of pre-revolution.

Quote two:
- “I decided to go home. I got a fake passport and disguised myself.” (60)

Explanation two:

- By this time in the story, the Shah had reigned over the entirety of Iran, and Uncle Anoosh, a wanted man at the time, tried to go back into the country. Although there might not be much reason for this, it shows his commitment to going against the Shah’s regime and how he wants to show his disagreement held against the Shah. In this passage, he is trying to portray how you should never give up. Although he fled to Russia for a few years he eventually came back to Iran to face his fate, which was 9 years in prison. This is what the author wants to portray through the image of Uncle Anoosh in this small quote.
-- Uncle also is killed for his acts of rebellion, he knew that was a possibility. So he rebels because he knows just how important that is.

There are many acts of rebellion through different important characters in the novel. All of these acts play a large role in deciding their future and shapes the message the author is trying to display. Whether it’s Marji trying to dress differently on the public streets, or Uncle Anoosh trying to get the Shah out of power before he finally takes control of it. The message that the story portrayed through different characters gives you a better perspective of the main goal Marji and her family + friends are trying to achieve. It won’t be easy to bring fun and liveliness out of war and revolution but these characters did that through the power of rebellion. While many would sit back and complain, Marji, Eby, Tagi, and Uncle Anoosh went into the frontline and fought for what they thought was right. They also didn’t let people tell them what they would or couldn’t do. The new regime said they couldn’t drink, they had bottles of wine stacked on top of each other in the basement. The new regime told them they couldn't play board games, so they possessed an entire cabinet full. The point of this book is through revolution, revolting, and rebellion, that’s the main message the author is trying to portray towards the audience.

Quote one:
- “Every situation offered an opportunity for laughs: like when we had to knit winter hoods for the soldiers...or when we had to decorate the classroom for the anniversary of the revolution.” (97)

Explanation one:
- Marji shows rebellion by expressing how she and her classmates disobey the laws of the new regime at her school. Marji and her classmates are forced to do things for soldiers in the war, such as participate in religious ceremonies and many other things. Marji has no connection with these things, yet she is forced to do them. This causes her to become rebellious and she starts to make fun out of the hard work she is forced to do. This act shows us how the author wants us to realize that you should only focus on the things that mean something to you. This causes Marji to become more independent and focus on the things that mean something to her and not just something the school system wants her to do.

Quote 2:
- “They were guardians of the revolution, the women’s branch. This group had been added in 1982, to arrest women who were improperly veiled. (Like me, for example)” (132)

Explanation 2:
- Marji was walking down the street with Nike blazers, a denim jacket, and some cool-looking pants. At the time, the regime wasn’t kind towards people who didn’t wear traditional clothing. This new regime wanted people to wear veils and black dressed clothing, sort of like the typical nun you see today. Marji shows rebellion by not wearing this clothing. The author wants us to know that even though we might think Marji is an innocent little girl, she is an activist against the new regime. The message portrayed is that no voice is unheard, even though you might be smaller and less wise you can still have a great impact on the world.
Well done here
