International protection seekers are men, women and children forced to leave their country of origin due to persecution, war, violation of human rights. They had to leave their homes, workplaces, families, friend, and social environment. Many of them will not see their loved ones ever again. Many of them have undergone torture, severe violence and have experienced dreadful shipwrecks. They had to undertake longest journeys to seek protection in Europe, in Italy. In inhuman conditions, they faced death crossing continents, countries, deserts and seas.

I'm Anna, I live in Puglia a beautiful southern Italian region surrounded by a wonderful sea.
I've been teaching in a Middle school since 2001. The school where I teach is called "Materdona - Moro" and it is in Mesagne (BR). The school staff includes the headteacher, 72 teachers and 12 members of the support staff. This school year we have 683 students organized into 32 classes. There is an interesting percentage of foreign students coming from Albania, Romania, China, Egypt, India and Ivory Coast. Some of them arrived here after a dangerous boat journey across the Mediterranean Sea, while others were born in Italy to foreign parents.

MY EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THIS COURSE

Lots of migrants and refugees land on our coasts. Unfortunately lots of people have bad prejudices about migrants such as "they come here to steal our homes, our jobs .../they destroy everything we give them..." and pupils grasp their family's opinions. So, the first thing I should do is fighting against ignorance and prejudices. I think I should help pupils become aware of these horrible problems and educate them to values such as tolerance, respect, brotherhood... I hope this course will help me understand how I can address this topic and how I can help my students become aware that we are all world citizens with the same rights.
