After the war, Japan had surrendered to the Soviet Union and the United States, causing the Soviet Union to control Northern Korea. The Soviets and U.S. were trying to rebuild Korea, but ended up leaving; causing South Korea to become defenseless. 
North Korea strengthened their troops and sent them to South Korea in 1950. Their troops had been better and stronger. When the United States had gotten word of what happened, we assisted South Korea with troops of our own.
