"We are always getting away from the present moment. Our mental existences, which are immaterial and have no dimensions, are passing along the Time-Dimension with a uniform velocity from the cradle to the grave" (6)

This quote shows how people are always advancing and should take advantage of the time that they have in their lives. The Time Traveler portrays this view throughout his journey as well as his bravery to time travel in general.

I recommend this book for a couple of reasons. First, it is very interesting and suspenseful and keeps the reader on their toes on what will happen next. It also shows the views and interests of Victorian England.

My book, The Time Machine by H.G. Wells, starts out with the narrator, introducing us to the Time Traveler. The Time Traveler is not named but is described as “pale face flushed and animated”(1), and “his grey eyes shone and twinkled”(1). This description and lack of a name give the reader a mysterious vibe as well as the Time Traveller to seem quirky. The next characters we meet are a group of dinner guests. The group is comprised of many respected gentlemen, with varying occupations. One of these guests is the narrator himself. While at dinner, the Time Traveller unveils a project of his. It is a small contraption made of ivory and brass that he claims can time travel. He places the machine on a small table with a lamp on it.

“ It was gone----- vanished! Save for the lamp and the table was bare.”(9). The guests are in a stupor trying to absorb what happened.

I think that this is a great way to begin this book. Wells does a great job of introducing the characters and events in a specific way as to not distract the reader from unnecessary information. The small time machine demonstration gives the reader the general direction that the story is heading and what kind of literary style the book is. One thing I would change however, is that it would be better if the narrator introduced himself because it is somewhat confusing about who he is and what his role other than the narrator is in the story. Overall the beginning of The Time Machine is very well written and constructed.
