I would have the student stay still as to not cause anymore injury then what’s already occurred. Next I would go check on the student that is injured and have another student find a janitor to have them clean up the mess.

Second of all, all students should be wearing goggles if someone in the class is doing an experiment. To prevent this I would have test tubes that are not safe for these kinds of experiments separated from the rest, labeled with the warning that they are not to be used in that experiment, and have the correct tubes already out for the students. I would also stress the importance of wearing goggles at all times when experiments are happening. EVEN IF YOUR GROUP IS DONE. We wait until all groups are done and things are put away safely. These students most likely ended up going to at least the nurse if not the hospital and their parents were called.

To prevent: Establish clearly before labs that food and drink are not allowed to be consumed during labs or experiments. Additionally, protection such as gloves should be used when working with strong chemicals

What to do: Call poison control or possibly 911 depending on the severity of the reaction. It can also be helpful to read the information on the back of whatever chemical was used to see what the appropriate next steps are

Prevention: It is very beneficial to use proper materials (test tubes) during labs, so I would make sure that none of our supplies pose any risk to the students. I would also make it very clear that protective gear (especially goggles) must be worn throughout the entirety of the lab until everyone is finished.

What to do: Identify the severity of the injury and respond accordingly (nurse, poison control, 911, etc). Explain to students the importance of protective gear
