This is such a fun fantasy/science fiction book for kids to read. In my experiences, kids love anything to do with food. This book invited them to imagine the impossible, and the activities get them to extend their thinking beyond the book and apply it to their own lives. It is also available on Netflix as a movie, which we watched together as a class this week as a last week of school movie day! We compared the book with the movie and had discussions about their similarities and differences.

My students love to read Junie B. Jones books because she is a relatable character. These books are labeled as humorous fiction. She gets in to funny situations, and has a funny way of talking about and dealing with them. There are so many books in the series, and they are engaging for younger students. These books are good for having discussions about right and wrong, and talking about what SHOULD have been done instead of what Junie B. actually did. When we read these books, my kids always say, "But can we read just one more chapter?!" The resource I include below is HUGE and differentiated! You can pick and choose what you want to use for what would work best with your group of kids. Students were provided a paperback copy of the book while it was read aloud so they could follow along.

The main character is about the same age as them, and is curious and mischievous - a combination that is fascinating to younger kids. I read this book with my class because I remember loving it when I was their age. This is a good book for making predictions because the chapters often end on a "cliff hanger." Students were provided a paper copy of the book while it was read aloud so they could follow along.

My class loved this chapter book. It is labeled as fiction. The main character is their age, and runs into some trouble with a piece of candy. This book is good for teaching about morals/lessons, and central/main idea. It lends itself to a lot of discussion, while allowing the kids to make connections to self and world. The book companion was a great resource to use as we went though the book together. I read the book aloud to students while displaying the book on the SMART Board for students to see from getepic.com. If you do not have an account on Epic Books, you should! It is free and has so many wonderful book resources available. You can also sign your students up for an account, and they can access any materials you add for them. Students were provided a paperback copy of the book while it was read aloud so they could follow along.

We love Magic Tree House books! Jack and Annie always go on a magical adventure to a far away place to solve a riddle. These books are labeled as adventure fantasy. They are great for a springboard into a research project, and include lots of vocabulary exposure. In this particular book, Jack and Annie find themselves in the African plains with many types of African animals and even a Masai Warrior. We listened to the book read aloud (provided below). The teacher who reads the book aloud also embedded a research project into the read aloud, which we followed as well. It is all in the YouTube video. I tweaked the project to fit my students' needs. There is also another huge differentiated book companion I picked and chose activities from. The kids really enjoyed this book because of the animals. Students were provided a paperback copy of the book while it was read aloud so they could follow along.

In keeping with the African Safari theme, we read this Magic Tree House book also set in Africa. This time, Jack and Annie go on an adventure in the African Rainforest. They meet a group of gorillas, and once again have to solve a mystery. We did not do a research project to go along with this novel. We did use activities I selected out of the book companion while reading. These books are also good for talking about characterization, because Jack and Annie are so different yet have to face the same set of problems. It is fun to talk about what we think each of them will do next - because they will likely have completely different ideas as far as approaching and solving problems. Students were provided a paperback copy of the book while it was read aloud so they could follow along.

This was one of the many books my class read during February for Black History Month. This was the one they engaged with the most and that resonated with them the most. It is labeled as fiction, but has historical connections throughout. It was a great segway into talking about segregation in the United States and important historical figures who fought to end it (Martin Luther King Jr., JFK, Malcom X, Ruby Bridges). There are important themes of segragation, discrimination, prejudice, and overcoming obstacles. The Storyline Online teacher's guide I uploaded below has wonderful suggestions for after reading activities. My class spent a lot of time just having discussions about what happened in this book, and connecting it to what actually happened in the United States. Many of them did not know about segregation or the Civil Rights Movement. We spent time researching about the important people previously mentioned. We also did the personal narrative activity, so they could make a text to self connection. As a teacher in an urban setting, I felt that this was an important book, and it was age appropriate. The main character is a little girl right around my student's age. When we were learning about Juneteenth the week preceding it, one student asked if we could re-read this book, noting that they remembered how important it was.
