'Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something wrong with me?'

Blanche's vanity and self-consciousness means that she is constantly worrying about what other people think of her. She becomes paranoid. In doing this, she divides herself from the group. As she says a few lines later, 'this place is a trap!'

'Are these grapes washed?'

Blanche still puts on the appearance of being prim and proper, asking whether her grapes are clean to eat. In contrast to the natives of the 'quarter', she is hiding behind false pretenses, possibly because she is afraid that people will not accept her i.e. as a former prostitute.

Their 'unmistakable aura of the state institution with its cynical detachment' is far removed from the world of the quarter, making them outsiders. As Blanche says later on, 'you are not the gentlemen I was expecting'.

Mitch p.103

Stage directions: 'The poker players stand awkwardly at the table - all except Mitch, who remains seated, looking at the table'.

Because of Mitch's failed attempt to woo Blanche, he feels unable to acknowledge her in person. Consequently, he remains seated.
