Having completed my day as a Science Technician, I have learned about what forms of tasks the Technicians undergo during the day. I assisted in preparing two practicals for tomorrow and the day after, and learned about the organisation of the laboratory. This in turn required some Health and Safety management, which also required research so as to keep up to date with the current legal requirements.

I do think I need to learn a little more about storage protocol and stocktaking. And the one thing I am rather unclear about is waste materials disposal.

All in all, the experience was enjoyable and I look forward to doing some more work as a Technician in the future.

i have just finished my day as a science technician, i have learned loads of things from Tanya today. Such as how busy her day can get and she still manages to get everything done in the correct time slots. i have assisted preparing 2 practicals for today and one for monday. i also learned where everything goes. i had also helped with the terrepin from the animal care room, i few more things i have done are :

i checked to see if equipment was working properly.
tidied after peoples practicals.
watered plants.
put equipment away.

that was just a few things from the day's work experience i had done. i also learned where to store chemicals and how to dispose of chemicals that have been used. i have also removed blades from scarples and replaced them with clean ones aswell as cleaning the actual metal part of the scarple. i think the only thing i would need to learn about a bit more is stock taking as everything else was covered or Tanya had explained them to me, i am clear on everything else that was covered for today.

I have learnt about making up solutions, delivering equipment to rooms, collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores, organising and storing chemicals and equipment and carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms and stores. Today I also learnt how to assist in practical classes and providing technical assistance to students as I was required to assist a class with their flame test experiment. I would like to learn more about how to dispose of different chemicals and materials in a lab and also how to construct and modify apparatus for experiments. I am unclear about how you store different chemicals/materials and would like to be able to understand that more.

I have enjoyed my time as a Science Lab Technician and Tanya Power (Lab Technician supervising me) was very helpful and fun to work with. I would look forward to a chance to do it again.

I have learnt a number of useful ways to applie what I have learnt in class to an actual practical working experience. Such as assembling equipment to be used during a lesson, correctly labelling products and jars with warnings vital to health and safety. I have also learnt about the accuracy in which a substance must be weighed for an experiment to go write as well as testing the calibration on pipettes to be as accurate as possible.

Overall, I believe that my day as a lab technician was very useful in showing me how a lab is run on a everyday basis.

I have done my day of work experience as a lab technician. It started of by printing out handouts for tutor's, checking all of the computers were working correctly and then I had to relabel known chemicals so that they had their new GSM symbol with their warning signs which are vital health and safety. I learnt about how the technicians spend their day at work, and to know that everyday is different. Today, I also prepared two experiments for tutors for the upcoming week and made sure everything was ready.

I believe that my day as a lab technician was very useful and if i was going to do it again, next time I would like to find out about how chemicals are stored and ordered, and to see again how a lab is run on a day-to-day basis.

Also went through assessments for risks e.g. contamination, used a 'magnetic stirrer' to dissolve solids into liquids, had to relabel chemicals to the new GSM symbols. I think that if i was to do this again i would want to know more about chemicals and why they are stored as they are and how to construct and modify apparatus. Im still unclear on how waste is disposed of.

My work experiance day is over already! I have learned so much from Tanya today. I can see how busy her day is and how much she has to go through and get done. I prepared 2 experiments ready for Friday and now understand how much time it takes to get everything ready for a practical. It was also good to know where everything goes and what certain equipment is used for that I didn't know before. It is Deffiantly going to be useful to know how to use a magnetic stirer, GHS, vaccum and gravity filtration system and how to use a rubber bulb pepett filler amongst other things I have gone through today like how to make up a solution of NaOH to 0.1 molar. I learnt how to put electric current/volts circurit together that I would be interested to learn more about. Thanks Tanya.

Spending the day as a lab technician I was able to take part in many activities and experience many different things that lab technicians will often have to do in their job.

I started off preparing a practical for a lesson and ensuring we had all the correct equipment. I was then able to trial out this experiment so that I was aware of what they were going to do and so I knew what to do when explaining to the other pupils. When asissting in class, i was able to show and explain the to the students what they needed to do with the experiment. I then had to clear the lab of any equipment and put it back in the correct places within the prep room.

Today, I also made a sodium hydroxide solution of 0.1 mol. I learnt the relative molecur mass, using the relative atomic mass. I was also able to work out the calculation to make the solution needed. Once I had done this, I made 500ml of sodium hydroxide.

I was then able to experience the importance of labeling substances and chemicals within the prep room. I helped label asprin makign sure that the warnign labels were correct. I also learnt about the GHS whilst doing this and was able to explore the store cupboard.

I would like to learn more about storing of chemicals and the procedures for it if i was to do it again.

I also got to have a nose around the chemical storage cupboard and learn about which chemical group goes where and why and how the chemicals are stored. The new world wide lab symbols were also talked about.

i would like to know more about the chemicals (what they do) and the practical i witnessed today.

one thing i am unclear on is what happens with chemical waste that can not just be disposed off

During my day as a lab technician I began by making sure the classrooms of the science department were tidy and all the computers were on so that lessons could begin at 9:00. Tanya then went through the different methods of storage and I saw how different chemicals are stored in different shelves and cabinets depending on their hazards and chemical properties. I learnt that the Global Harmonised System was recently developed to prevent misinterpretation and confusion on chemical labels sent from inter-national suppliers.

I then prepared a heart dissection by placing all the required apparatus on the boards, and ensured the sharps container and dissinfectant were ready.

I then learnt how to calculate relative molecular mass, and how to calculate how much of a substance is needed to make a solution depending on how much you want to make. I looked at chemical labels to see what was present, including the name, chemical symbol, hazard symbol, and molecular weight.

I made potassium bromide solution by taking its relative mass of 119g, multiplied it by 0.2 (the molar concentration required) and then took my answer of 23.8g and multiplied it by 250ml (the amount of solution required) and divided it by 1000ml to find out how much potassium bromide was required for 250ml of distilled water to create the solution, which was 5.95g. I then did the same for potassium iodide, which with a Mr of 166g gave me 8.3g, and potassium chloride, which with a Mr of 74.55g gave me 3.73g. All of these solutions were measured in a volumetric flask, which I then labelled with the name, type of solution and the relevant hazard words.

On my laboratory technician day, I helped clean up after a practical and put apparatus away after the class had finished. I neutralised chlorine, bromine and iodine so it was safe to put in the sink using sodium carbonate and sodium thiosulphate. I labelled beakers ready to be filled for another practical, and then filtered crystals from chemical store bottles. I researched Bunsen burners and created informative posters on the history, how to use them correctly, how to assemble them correctly, and different types of flames.

just completed my work experience as a laboratory technician, enjoyed finding out what happens on a day to day activities for someone who works as a lab technician. l helped to get the equipment ready for an practical due in a few days. l also learnt how the chemicals are stored, where to find out about addition information on any of the substances(CLEAPSS). The highlight of the day was on how to prepare a solution eg NaCl from 0.1m to 250cm cubic, also how to calculate relative molecule mass of a compound substance.

A day with Tanya was like a day at your best friends house, she made me feel welcome in a way, I did not want to leave, she has taught me a lot, e.g. the cleapss health and safety website, how to prepare a solution, and how to calculate the total mass weight of a complicated formula. I will smile at her presence when ever we meet in class or the corridor, but I will never forget my colleague, Tanya.

Good luck to everyone else she will take on as Junior Lab Technician!

And thank you Tanya.

I have just completed my day as a lab Technician with Tanya. It has been an enjoyable day and an interesting experience. I have enjoyed looking at all the different types of equipment and its functions, (especially the tiny flasks!!!) and some of the gadgets that are used. gone are the days when you had to spend forever waiting for something to dissolve. I enjoyed making the solution up ready for a future experiment, it was good exercise for working out how moles work, something I will look into a bit deeper. Labelling up correctly was also very interesting especially cross references with Tanyas Bible (CLEAPSS). I also enjoyd getting things ready for other lessons. all in all a most enjoyable experience and day.

Thank you Tanya :0)
