Maire was always used to a simple, quiet and peaceful life on the farm. Marie grew up in the green hills of the country side of Galway. Since she was a child she always enjoyed her calm way of life. She woke up at 8 o'clock sharp every morning. As soon as her bright green wellies were on she was straight onto the farm. Her favorite animals were always the hens. She had given every hen a name and they were almost what she considered friends. She would feed them and give them water but she always used to talk to them and tell them any worries that she had. Maire felt a sense of comfort around the hens. No matter what she said to them their was a sense of confidentiality between her and the hens. She always knew no matter how bad things seemed she always had her beloved hens to talk to.

My hen Ruby changed my life.. yes for real
A hen cured my depression but we won’t get into that just yet. If I travel back to when I was short and stubborn and had no idea what hardships were coming for me I was dog crazy. I dreamed of having a dog any dog just to chase around all day and fill with various treats and cuddles but unfortunately my parents disagreed. I say unfortunately although It didn’t actually turn out so unfortunate as I received a hen off my grandmother for two reasons ; one out of pity and two to shut me up. From there this hen became my pride and joy..

Instead, I was greeted by a startling shriek of an uninvited guest, a hen. She was rooting through our perfectly planted bed of hydrangeas, stomping on every flower she could.

Good afternoon to you all, I'm sure you are all aware of the impact us humans are having on the plant we live. Some people may feel they aren't quite in 'danger' or feel that climate change is relevant in there lives, but today I will address this issue and counteract this stubbornness or in some cases the lack of knowledge amongst some people. You may think that 'I'll be long gone before it has any major effect on us humans'. But let me tell you that effects are very evident in every part of the world.

I was six years old, my favourite part of my week was going to see my dad at work. I loved seeing the lorries and all the men working and watching everything on front of me unfold. However, I did not love the hens that lurked in the corner of the yard waiting for me to get closer so they could torment me. Every week I made sure to avoid those horrible hens but one week they escaped, all fifteen of them, out and about. No one else panicked, could they not see the atrocity that was about to unfold? My pink wellies were their first target, they came running. The pecking started. It was like a shower of pointy stones being thrown at my feet. Squawking in between every peck, it almost felt like they were laughing at me.

It was a Saturday morning and the sun was beaming into my room. I quickly got up and gave the empty chicken coop one last look. I rushed into my parents room and of coarse found them fast asleep. I was so excited, we hopped into the car. As we made the journey to the farm to collect our four new chickens, my nerves started to kick in, my mind was racing. What if the chickens don’t like there new home or even worse don’t like me! My tummy hurt and the hairs on my arms began to stand up. I thought of all the good from the nerve reckon images in my head. I’m great with animals and they always love me I thought too myself. Whats the worst that could happen there only chickens after all. I asked my brother in a quite voice what he wanted to name his chicken, but I could still hear that voice in the back of my head with all those horrible thoughts.
