Max was the son of the man who saved Hans’ life so he wanted to help. This action put their lives in great danger.   • One of the major themes reflected in this book is kindness and cruelty. There are many examples of both. A major act of kindness was when the Hubermanns took in Max. they put their own lives in danger to help someone in danger. An major act of cruelty is the hatred and violence against Jewish people during the war. Concentration camps were proof of this cruelty.
