When conferring with English Language Learners, how much scaffolding in terms of sentence stems, language correction, etc. should be given? Do we consider this aspect like we do conventions, and only have it be the focus of the conferring session at certain times, or will letting it go allow poor language skills to be internalized? For example, let's say a student is writing a small moment story and says (but with incorrectly spelled words) "Yesterday it is sunny and warm and me go to beach and there has fun I see 4 shiny fish and 1 try bite me but she no can bite because I am much fast" After complimenting, do we help re-write with the correct tense, pronouns, and syntax and then make our teaching/coaching moves, or is making these corrections part of the teaching during conferring? And if so, how often?
