Both types of albinism require both parents to at least be a carrier for the disease.

Oculocutaneous albinism is an autosomal recessive inheritance, which means both copies of the genes have been mutated. Many people with this type of albinism have parents that were carriers, but none of them were affected. When both parents are carriers with one defective gene each, and neither parent has albinism they have a 1 in 4 chance of passing on both copies of the defective gene to the child, who will have albinism.

Ocular albinism is x-linked, which means the x chromosome is mutated. Males mainly get this type of albinism because they only have one x chromosome and girls have two. One of the girls x chromosome turns off, so they're just a carrier, but since males only have one, they have a higher chance of having this disorder. The males affected that pass it down, make their daughters carriers, but their sons can't have it because males pass down y chromosomes.

Babies can be diagnosed before birth if a couple has had a child with albinism and doctors know which mutations have caused it. Doctors remove cells from the placenta, called chronic villi sampling, at 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy to test DNA. In newborns, doctors compare skin, eyes, and hair compared to the parents, older siblings and ethnic group. To confirm, however, doctors do an eye exam. They look for translucent iris and retina and other eye abnormalities. To find out if someone is a carrier there is an Albinism Sequencing Panel.

A person with albinism is missing the pigment from their irises (the colored part of the eye). As a result, they will usually have very pale blue, red or grey eyes. The missing pigment can also cause other eye conditions. Except for eye problems, most people with albinism are just as healthy as anyone else. Eye problems include, reduced sharpness, rapid, involuntary eye movements and increased sensitivity to light.

Emotionally, someone with any type of albinism is emotionally unstable. For instance, people with albinism in Africa are seen as magical creatures. They are killed and used as potions for the witchcraft. This can make people with albinism very scared and depressed because of how little people think of them.

Not many physical limitations, other than keeping out of the sun.In the United States, most people with albinism live normal life spans and have the same types of general medical problems as the rest of the population.

found in fewer than five people per 100,000 in the United States and Europe. Although albinism can affect all races, other parts of the world have a much higher rate; for example, albinism is found in about 20 out of every 100,000 people in southern Nigeria

Although there are no cures, there are things that can be done to help. Most treatments involve visual rehabilitation. Many children will need to wear prescription lenses, which can provide improvements in their vision, children should receive annual examinations by an eye doctor, and apply sunscreen frequently. Children should also receive annual skin assessments to screen for skin cancer or lesions that could lead to cancer.

The person believed to discover albinism was Sir Archibald Garrod.
