In the middle of the play Reverend Hale is realizing there is no Devil in Salem and is motivated to try and help Elizabeth and John Proctor, because he suspects they have nothing to do with conjuring spirits.
"No-no, I come of my own, without the court's authority. Hear me. I know not if you are aware, but your wife's name is - mentioned in the court. (198)
By the end of the play Reverend Hale knows there was no Devil in Salem and doesn't want anyone, especially John Proctor, die for something that never existed. Reverend Hale tries to motive Elizabeth Proctor to save her husband, but it doesn't work.
"Woman, plead with him! Woman! It is pride, it is vanity. Be his helper!- What profit him to bleed? Shall the dust praise him? Shall the worms declare his truth? Go to him, take his shame away! (240)
