In Langston Hughes "Mother to Son" poem there was a lot of oppression of African Americans. They were not allowed the same rights or privileges, such as living conditions, as other people. For example in line 7, his mother says "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.It's had tacks in it,And splinters,And boards torn up," This shows that her experiences and journey in life have not been easy.

In Aimee Nezhukumatathil's "Wrap" poem there were strict gender roles in India. Women had to wear certain clothing to cover up. In line 12, the author states," her small hand wraps again the emerald green pallu of her sari tucked in at her hips, across her breast," This describes the style of clothing women wore in India as tradition. This description helps us better understand the context of the word 'wrap' and how it is used in her culture.

"Facing It" is a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa that was written to describe his guilt and remorse after serving in the Vietnam War. Komunyakaa served in the United States army from 1969 till 1970, after which he was awarded the Bronze Star. When analyzing certain lines of the poem it's obvious the overall tone is guilt. Read these lines, "I touch the name Andrew Johnson;

I see the booby trap's white flash." The name Andrew Johnson sticks out to him, which after some reading it's easy to see Komunyakaa lost this friend in the Vietnam war. He's facing the guilt as he has survived, no matter how much he doesn't want to.

In Thich Nhat Hanh's "Drink Your Tea", he is advising the reader how they should complete actions or, metaphorically speaking, "drink their tea". He's telling one to do things, to move, as if it were the only thing that's happening, because it is the only thing that matters. At that moment. "Live the actual moment/Only this moment is life. This poem is from a book Nhat Hanh published in 1990. At the time he lived in a isolate area that one, especially someone in America (where it is never still), might think is boring. Lonesome. But this poem perfectly describes how in every moment, every place, every action you complete can be fulfilled if you live in the Now and not worry about the future.

The setting of this poem takes place in Mexico City in 1954, it also took place when the author was just a little boy growing up. Around this time, the president at the time was Adolfo Ruiz Cortines who was a very caring president that made sure to erase any trace of poverty within Mexico City. This means that Jorge as as a child would not have had to deal with the troubles of poverty. Also 1954 was the time where "Hurricane Alice" ocurred. The tornado was quite close to Mexico City which suggests that Jorge may have been effected by that tornado too.

They would have this ideal picture of love and whenever they were trying to find a special someone, they would always look for specific qualities. For instance, the poet says, ¨...you who want to grasp the heart of things, hungry to know where meaning lies.¨ What the poet means by this is that people try to find love and when they realize nobody fits the ideal image, then they get upset and continue to look more.

Aimee Nezhukumatathil, coming from an Indian background wrote 'Wrap' In the the poem, culturally, we can see what seems to be the way women are expected to dress. In line 12-14, the author gives a brief description of the clothing, "Her small hand wraps, again the emerald green pallu of her sari tucked in at her hips" Socially we can see that "wraps" differ from culture to culture. For instance in lines 1-2 Aimee contrasts meanings of "wraps" in different cultures, "I don't mean when a movie ends, as in, it's a! Nor tortillas splitting with the heavy wet of bean." Her comparison doesn't only depict her Indian background, but it shows other cultures and social elements as well.
