Social Justice Leadership Style

Who will go out to the communities and show the world that everyone can have a taste of success, I will, we will"? This was a key principle of the video below. How is that accomplished? It's accomplished through leadership. In this experience this educator was a leader who's intent was to bring awareness to her students and also inspire them to be social justice leaders.

According to Gardner (2000) and Sergiovanni (2000) leadership takes on many different forms. Gardner defines leadership as a process of persuasion or example by which and individual or leadership team induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader and his or her followers. leadership styles involve a lot of diversity that include leaders that are quiet, loud, visionaries, mobilizers, revolutionary, militant, self-effacing, inspirational, strategic, and the like. The educator Ms. Byer's challenges her students on how they will serve as a social justice advocate having recognized inequalities. This first and for most requires some level of servant leadership. Sergiovanni (2000) suggests servant leadership is the means by which leaders can get the gain legitimacy that is provided by the responsibility of leadership that come with a sense of direction to establish a purpose and inspiration. This is practiced and served best by purposing, empowerment, and leadership by outrage. In this sense, the educator empowered her students to take action to do what is right and what is equitable. Servant leadership can be practiced in a number of similar contexts, scenarios, or examples but, I would argue must remain consistent in every educational aspect when inequities are either perceived or obvious. When it comes to social justice leadership, school administrator, teachers, parents, and students should be and feel empowered to confront issues even when challenges and barriers exist. When people are empowered and have the autonomy to engage in social justice activism unrestricted chains will be broken, walls will come down, and barriers will be removed.

The Implication of Social Change Movements

I believe social justice is all encompassing and involves multiple components, contexts, and approaches. The video below serves as a testament the various social change movements and inspirations that impact and influence, people, places, and processes in a way that is transformational. In this sense, effective transformational leadership according to Peters (2010), should be understood in light of the various elements that impact leadership within organizations and include context, the people and processes through which leadership occurs that include exchanges between leaders and constituents.

Transformational leadership is characterized as possessing charisma, which draws confidence in employees, having inspiration which excites employees, individual consideration paying close attention to employees, and intellectual simulation using creativity and rational solutions are used to solve problems. As noted in the video below, one must take on social justice leadership as a moral responsibility and embrace it as part of their moral conscience. Parents, educators, and community members in this regard must find their gift, "roll-up" their sleeves, to make a difference. This difference can be in the context of education, mass incarceration of African - Americans, the work on drugs, or restricted access to institutions that result in broken communities, and dysfunctional homes.

Social justice movements through transformational leadership have the potential have the potential to effect real change whether its police brutality like Michael Brown, Eric Gardner, Trayvonne Martin, and the like, or it can also effect change in legislation, policy, processes and structure. Or for LGBT, Me Too, Women's right to choose social justice leadership should embrace transformational characteristics

Social justice leaders must distinguish between the use of transformational or transactional leadership approaches and when its appropriate to use either approach and when they overlap. Find what works for you in the context that your doing it.

Nipsey Hussle (Background)- Example of Social Justice Leadership

In light of this recent tragedy I wanted to highlight the late Nipsey Hussele and his contribution to social justice.

NIPSEY HUSSLE’s store was the first “smart” clothing store in history where you were able to purchase a shirt or pieces of clothing, with each tag scannable. Once purchased, it’s activated, you’re able to go home, snap the QR code, and listen to unreleased Nipsey Hussle music. With major artists he’s collaborated with music was available to download without the use of apple music, tidal, spotify, and pandora three DAYS before anyone heard it. #GENIUS That money was used to fund the restaurants surrounding his own store, to renovate them and to make them healthier eating choices. #POWERFUL He chose that area because some of the youth and adults typically didn’t have cars, so their options of good clothing and healthier food choices were a challenge to get to. He made an easily accessible way for them to make legitimate purchases. #THOUGHTFUL He teamed up with Dave Gross to launch a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) program in his hometown of Crenshaw for the youth, bridging the gap between silicon valley and inner city kids. The campaign was entitled “Too Big To Fail”. #GREATNESS He chose realty over bankruptcy due to the industries push in expensive vehicles, diamonds, and other things he knew he couldn’t afford. #RESPECT The way he looked at Lauren, you KNEW it was different from the rest of these wack celebrity relationships. It was LOVE. HE HAD RESPECT FOR WOMEN. He had a documentary with Steph Curry on the importance of respecting your mother and grandmother, and it’s significance on how you’ll treat your wife. Nipsey said to Steph: “I just don’t want to be a hypocrite to my own kids in the way a woman should be treated”. You respect your mom, you respect your woman, your children can have a solid example of greatness. #RIPNIPSEY

(Facebook, 2019)

Social Justice Leadership Defined:

Social justice leadership involves unrelenting advocacy invoked by a passion for equity, inclusion, and fairness on behalf of underserved, underprivileged, minority groups even in the face of challenges, barriers, confrontation and conflict. This is leadership that inspires the hopeless, attracts diversity and inclusion, and transforms structures, policies, and practices through both opposition and mutual agreement. Dantley & Tillman (2010) provides context and defines it as leadership for social justice investigates and poses solutions for issues that generate and reproduce inequities within institutions that impact marginalized groups.

Social justice leadership can be defined in various different ways some of which scholars would argue there is no fixed definition. That being said, of all the definitions surrounding social justice there are some key characteristics exist regarding:

- A consciousness of the broader social, cultural, and political contexts of schools

-The critique of the marginalizing behaviors and predispositions of schools and their leadership

-A commitment to the more genuine enactment of democratic principles in schools

- A moral obligation to articulate counterhegemonic vision or narrative of hope regarding education

- A determination to move from rhetoric to civil rights activism

Social justice also involves three essential components that include:

1). leadership for social justice
2.) Moral transformative leadership,
3). Social justice praxis

All of which, that interrogates policies and procedures that influence social inequalities and marginalization, deconstructs the work of school administration in order to prevent leadership practices the undergird inequities and marginalization, and create activism that bring about democratic reconstruction
