I could even hear the waterfalls from my bedroom when it rained. At different times we had cassowary, snakes, opossums, and even a giant goanna lizard on our balcony which surrounded the house on 4 sides. When I read this book I can feel the weather and hear the noises of the rainforest and see the beauty of the reef. And because I haven't been home for a long time I do very much feel the the fragility that is described as to whether it will still be there. It brings back the nostalgic memories of the fish curry (maccher jhol) cooked by my mother which we rejoiced as a family. Going to the fish market and buying live fish was a look forward for every Sunday morning. Taking the tram ride where the pace of the tram matched the pace of life. Durga puja the biggest festival of Kolkata which brings the city alive and the city looks like a bride for a week and more. Good Night Delhi by Nitya Khemka highlights the sites and iconic landmarks this dynamic city has to offer. Many of India's most beloved regions are artfully celebrated in this book appreciating India’s natural and cultural wonders. 

This is a place where I was born. It brings sentimental connections and reminds me of the childhood memories spent with my grandparents. As a child I used to visit these monuments with my family and  cousins to enjoy a day out or have picnics. I used to look forward to visit these beautiful places and appreciate the beauty and know the history behind the artistic monuments.
The book is special and impactful as it has beautiful illustrations and vocabulary.

Post Covid, this all have started to look like a dream. The story brought back the memories of the vacation we took before Covid came up and locked us all into our homes. It had all the places mentioned where we visited while in Paris and the fresh treats we had from the French Bakeries. The author wrote about Champs Elysees, visiting Eiffel tower and viewing the entire city, it was too nostalgic. 
 
Wishing to go back to normal and have those blissful vacations rather than being locked up at home.

While reading this book I could relate my own experience visiting the farm for the first time. The inquisitive behaviour of the child made me recall the memories and the intriguing conversations I had with the beekeepers.

Humming Bird by Nicola Davis

Filled with illustrations created in watercolour and watercolour pencil with gold ink, this beautiful picture book follows the journey of the ruby-throated hummingbirds. The hummingbirds touch many lives and evoke wonder as they fly away, and to the girl's surprise, she sees a hummingbird much later in the year after her family has settled into their new home. The most evoking  images that I found are in the double-page spread showing the arrival of spring. All those greens and soft colours and mountain peaks are easy to the eyes, and evoked a feeling of peace in me. The journey of the migratory birds is traced from Mexico and Central America to the US and southern Canada and then back again in the fall..The book creates the essential Wanderlust that we all crave for in the pandemic. I wish to go back in the times when we used to travel and wonder. The setting appeals to me as I was supposed to travel to Canada when the pandemic struck us and left all plans deserted. The author creates a sense of longing for freedom across borders without any restrictions. I hope the world heals soon and we can all savour the beauty of this world.

This book takes me down the memory lane when I was young and was in Mumbai for a few months. I quite often visited beaches during my stay there and experienced similar feelings as the girl in the book goes through. I liked standing amidst the waves and enjoyed seeing them come and go back with a lash. It was a mixed feeling of joy and fear. I can still feel the same sounds of waves and birds ringing in my ears that I heard in this read aloud video.

 I relived this feeling and experience a several times later when I visited Goa with my family and saw my son doing the same. He would splash his hands in the waves like the girl did and would catch shells that come along with the waves.

The book instantly trans ported me to those days of frequent visits to beaches, watching and playing with the waves, chasing them and then rushing back to get away as they lashed back with full force and splash.

Those are carefree days where we have just one agenda: fun! Visiting places, evening teas, the wonderful weather, endless shopping trips...everything used to be marvelous. 
I remember feeling what Katie feels on my first ever visit to this city. Everything was different. And then exploring the city on my own with my husband...there was an apprehension just like Katie felt.

This Book takes me down the memory lane where spending time in nature, trecking, walking in the woods, planning day trips to nearby farms was a regular feature as I grew up. Every weekend my dad would take us to the outskirts of the city and let us be with nature (without any agenda). It was through these experiences that I developed a lot of sensitivity, stillness, patience and just be with the moment. This book talks about the importance of being Kind. Chloe and her friends shun the new girl, Maya, who eventually stops coming to school. When Chloe's teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe realizes how much better it could have been if she'd shown a little kindness toward Maya. 

I could relate to the setting of the school, where I have often been a new student due to my fathers frequent transfers. I have faced situations where I was not easily accepted into groups which were already formed and I was considered as an outsider. I have been touched by the kindness of a teacher, who would encourage chn to be friends with me or one child in the class who took the initiative and invited me in her friend circle. So I could easily relate to the context of bullying and kindness as a new kid in the school

I have always deeply connected with the themes and illustrations in Oliver Jeffers' books. On its face, Lost and Found is a very simple story in which a boy finds and befriends a penguin. However, the theme is much more profound. As an adult, I have related to it through my own experiences of how a friend can come into your life at the exact moment you need them, and fill a hole that you didn't even know existed in your heart. The illustrations in this book are in the typical style of Oliver Jeffers, simple and dream-like. I have always felt that I am in the boat with the boy, travelling back and forth from the South Pole, in search of my penguin. Plucking coconuts from the tree was part of our daily family routine. I used to spend hours in the field with my grandparents watching them pluck cocunuts. I used wait with my glass for my grandmother to cut the coconut and pour the water into my glass and then came then came the hard task. After all the joy -  was expected to assist my grandmother (ammmachi ) to scrap the coconut. Phew!! In this story the author has brought alive the magic of simplicity that exists even today in the small mountain villages. I quite relate with the sentiments of unfiltered joy that the little child expresses as she goes about her daily routine in the company of her affectionate grandparents. Sleeping to the sound of frogs singing and waking up to the ring of cowbells in pristine surroundings is heartening. There is no fear even when she is surrounded by snakes. The simple village setting is vividly projected through the illustrations and the text.
