In the two paintings, we can see only one person ( a woman). Morning Sun takes place in a bedroom and Automat, in a Dinner. In the two paintings, the women look very sad but in contrast with that, they are in the light. In automat, the foreground is very dark, we don't know what there is, if is it a street or a subway. However in Morning Sun, we know she's in a building in a city. The colours are dull not very vivid. In Morning sun, the atmosphere is rather warm: the woman wear just a night coat. In Automat, it's quite the opposite. The woman is inside a Dinner with a heater and she wears warm coat and keeps her glove. She looks very anxious. She rests closed but in Morning Sun, the woman looks the horizon. She looks more happy.

Sometimes on Hooper’s paintings, we can see some similarity. For example, on Morning sun and Automat there are resemblances. On both of them, Hooper paints a girl, which is alone: she is the only character. They all seem thinking and lost on their mind. Their faces are very detailed that pass us the emotions of the two girls. In Morning sun and Automat, there is a passage who make a contrast between inside the room and outside: the city. Even if there are similarity, there are also differences. For example, on Morning Sun the message is more joyful and hopeful. The girl seems to be soothed. On the contrary, the girl on Automat, seems to be anxious, maybe she is thinking about a trouble. The light contrast too. One is very colourful, vivid and the other is colourless, sad. On the Automat, the girl hides under her hat whereas the girl on Morning sun who look up at the sun.

Paris Louise
Tavernier Eliette

New York Movie and Two on the Aisle

We can see that the two paitings take place in theatres or cinemas. In Two on the Aisle, Hopper uses the light to focus on some figures in an empty theatre. This is the same effect in New York Movie, a blond woman is highlighted by a lamp down to the stairs just behind the auditorium, the cinema room which is not totally filled. New York Movie was maybe based on Hopper's wife, Jo. In the painting, "Jo" take the role of an usher who is probably bored of the film that she maybe already see a thousand of times, she is waiting to the curtain to close. In Two on the Aisle, we can also see three figures who are sitting during the quiet moment before the performance. It looks like a single frame from a real movie. We can say that Hopper was really good for making the illusory world of the theater and the cinema.

                                                                                              Clément CADINOT
                                                                                               Julien CHAMBON

The "House by the railroad", represents a big house on the countryside, in the background It's looks like very old and left, we observe a railroad just in front of it, in the foreground, wich can explain why it's abandon. We can think that the house is haunted if we are paranoid.

The "Approaching the city", shows a big rail just in the foreground, and in back ground we can see some buildings, not very pretty and colorless.

In those 2 paints, First we haven't seen any commun point but we put them side to side. Then we found an obviously point, that the two of them, have a railroad. 0n the "house by the railroad", the railroad is less visible than it's on the "Approching the city"; on these paint, it's almost the only thing we can see ! After, both of them are colorless and dull. They presents landscapes, one is in the countryside and the other is a cityscape. Both are perspective. Those paints are quiet puzzling and there aren't any people in. But in "House by the railroad" they are so many details, more than "Approaching the city".

Juliette CHALAYE
Luna DAMATO

In Chop Suey, we can see two women in the foreground who are talking and drinking a coffee and we can see a couple in the background but in Night Hawk, there are four people whose a couple, the barman and one man who drunk alone.
Comparing House by the railroad and Approaching the City

-Common points:
The principal common point is the railroad wich is present on the foreground of each painting. They both represent houses or buildings. The colors are dull, there isns't any people. It seems abandoned, dead.
-Differences:
On the House by the railroad, the painting represents just one house, and Approaching the city is a cityscape. The House by the Railroad represents an old house, opposite to Approching the city wich is more modern. In Approaching the city, we can see a wall between the cityscape and the railroad, whereas in the House by the railroad, there are just the house and the Railroad. On the House of the railroad, a big part of the painting is the sky, that we see just a very little part on Approaching the city.
The railroad represents in the paintings the life, the way to the future. Hopper shows us the evolution of America, wich is going to be more industrial. The old America is dying and technology is taking a bigger place. The painting of the House by the Railroad represents the old America and Approaching the city comes after. It's the evolution of Hopper's America.
Farah Amrou
Camille Richer

This painting it'sb look like a scene of cinema. The brillance is dull because hopper use warm colours like red orange yellow... On the right part is shiny in constrast with the left part who is so dark!! We can see one women with blond hairs and blue suit. The subject mater of the painting is linking with the title because we can see a room of cinema and we can imagine is in New York.

House by the railroad and Approaching the City

Common points between the two pictures :
  - There is a railway.
- There is nobody.
Description : The House : It's as if a country landskape, it contrast with the second picture because it's more a cityscape. The colours in the House are more colourful and vivid than those of the second paint, it's more dull. The landskape of the two picture are very different. In "Approaching the city", the buildings are dirty. It's a kind of sad cityskape. Because it seems abandonned. But with "House by the railroad", the house seems more clean and lighting.
Post by : Clara PASIAN

Edward Hopper's paintings (Anouk Pili/Anaïs Perrin)

The two pictures have got similarities.

In first, we can see a cityscape. On both, the character is alone and it’s a girl. Their facial expression is sad and blank. There are not a lot of details.

Besides, the two pictures have got differences. In Automate the girl is in a cafe on a chair whereas in Morning Sun she's in a room on a bed. The both are sittings.
In the first picture, it's the night while in the second it's the morning.

In Automate the dark colors contrast with the bright colors. In Morning Sun, there are mostly cold colors with the blue and the green and a little of hot colors with the orange and the pink.
In addition the brilliance in the first picture is dull, it's warming. In Morning Sun the brilliance is vivid.

The two pictures are pleasant to see, and we think it's at very moving and puzzling time because we wonder what are they doing, what are they thinking, and why are they here alone.

Automate, 1927

Morning Sun, 1952
