A citizen in ancient Greece had a fully different meaning than today. Greeks could only be a citizen if they were a white male who lived in his home town.

They did not like how the monarchy was ruling Greece, and plotted to take control. The people of Greece were tired of the aristocrats ruling them, so they rose up and, knowing they had the advantage of numbers, overthrew the oligarchy. To make sure this didn't happen again, new rulers formed a democracy

We have a representative democracy. That's what congress and that stuff is for. Greece had a direct democracy in which all citizens could vote for their leader and their laws.
