         <title>Refusal</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are many characters in <em>Fahrenheit 451</em> with problems that keep building because they don’t recognize them, or refuse to do so. In the beginning of the book, Guy Montag had just met Clarisse McClellan for the first time when she asks him if he is happy and then runs away. Montag thinks to himself, “Of course I’m happy. What does she think? I’m not? he asked the quiet rooms. He stood looking up at the ventilator grill in the hall and suddenly remembered that something lay behind the grill, something that seemed to peer down at him now. He moved his eyes quickly away” (Bradbury 8). Clarisse had a genuine question for Montag, but his soliloquy is a symbol of his arrogance. He is so caught up in his own narcissism that he doesn’t stop and think about the fact that maybe he isn’t as happy as he thinks. There is also foreshadowing because later on, he starts to think about whether or not he is truly happy. Before getting to know Clarisse, Montag didn’t think twice about owning books even though he was well aware this was illegal. After several long conversations with Clarisse, he begins to undergo an internal change causing him to become a dynamic character and question several of his previous life choices. After Mildred, his wife, finds out about these books, she argues with Montag about them because she knew it was illegal and didn’t want to break the law. Montag felt what he was doing was okay and the fight with Mildred sent him running to the subway in anger. “I’m numb, he thought. When did this numbness really begin in my face? In my body? The night I kicked the pill bottle in the dark, like a buried mine” (Bradbury 73). Montag’s stream-of-consciousness acts as indirect characterization as well because he starts to realize his life isn’t as perfect as he thought. The first time, Montag is refusing to acknowledge his problems as to not disrupt what he views as an okay life. As these problems build up and become more frequent, Montag starts to not even notice that he has these problems or how bad they are affecting him. Both forms of denial are ways the characters negatively cope with their problems to make their lives easier to deal with.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Violence</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Fahrenheit 451</em> has several characters that don’t deny their problems, but do not have adequate resources to positively deal with these problems. In the novel, the firemen go around town burning down houses with books inside, and at one of the fires Montag stole a book before it was burned. He kept it a secret from his wife by hiding it under his pillow, but one day while another fireman, Beatty, was there, she went to fix his pillow and found the book. Beatty said to Montag, “Surely you remember the boy in your own school class who was exceptionally bright; did most of the reciting and answering while the others sat like so many leaden idols, hating him. And wasn’t it this bright boy you selected for beatings and tortures after hours?” (Bradbury 55). This boy was a symbol of being different and the other children could not accept the fact that he was smarter than them so they beat him up. Beatty gave this anecdote so Montag would begin to understand how he, like others, feared things that were different and proved it to him with an example of how he once reacted using violence. Montag collects more books over time until finally, the fireman show up to burn his house down. As Montag runs away from the burnt down house, he begins to think about how he just killed Beatty with a flamethrower and how it seemed too easy. “Beatty had wanted to die. He had just stood there, not really trying to save himself, just stood there, joking, needling…” (Bradbury 116). Beatty could be considered the embodiment of conflict because he represents both internal and external conflict. The fact that Beatty let Montag kill him so easy shows that internally, he was fighting with the thought of not wanting to be alive. On the other hand, there is external conflict because he often was rude towards other people which was likely him expressing his feelings in a different way. In both situations, the characters don’t know how to properly deal with their feelings so it comes out in a violent way.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Anxiety affects people no matter where there are and can cause such severe symptoms that it messes up what they were doing. However, there is a difference between normal anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder (or any other anxiety disorder). Normal anxiety is caused because of stress and affects everyone, but can be super helpful whereas G.A.D. causes stress and isn’t helpful. Three tips to controlling anxiety are feel in control of the situation, forgive yourself, and have a purpose/meaning in life.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Fahrenheit 451</em> portrays denialism as a positive coping mechanism used by individuals with mental illnesses but Bradbury was incorrect predicting this. Mental disorders are very frequent because "[m]ore than half of all Americans will be diagnosed with a mental disorder at some time in their life” ("Mental"). Extensive testing is done so that people aren’t being diagnosed unless they truly have a mental illness which would cause faulty statistics. There isn’t a specific cause for these mental disorders, but instead a number of things that contribute to the risk ("Mental"). The wide variety of mental illnesses all have different symptoms that affect people in their own way whether that be severe or mild. Mental illnesses may have different effects for everyone, but men tend to try and hide their feelings rather than talk about them ("Men"). Denial is “when a person refuses to accept that anything is wrong…” and is considered a harmful way to manage emotions ("Helpful"). Denial is conidered harmful  because these feelings get bottled up and can cause a person to let them all out at once and act explosive which is not a good thing ("Helpful").  A positive way to handle any unpleasant emotions is to pause and think things through, acknowledge what caused these feelings, think about how to make the situation better, and use what was previously determined to help. Without asking for help from a professional, there are other positive coping mechanism to do at-home such as: mood boosters, addressing basic human needs (eating, drinking, sleeping), processing feelings, volunteering, and relaxation exercises ("Helpful"). It is important to use positive coping techniques instead of negative ones because treating mental illnesses may be difficult but “treatment will let you lead a full, productive life” (Harvard). Although, it is important to find coping mechanisms that work for you because many that may seem positive actually cause more stress in the long run (Aldwin). There are very few studies done on coping with mental illness because there are “... considerable challenges to obtaining controlled data on social interactions…” (Kroska and Harkness). This, along with the fact that mental illnesses affect everyone differently, make it hard to make a set plan for how to "cure" them. Unlike in <em>Fahrenheit 451, </em>positive coping mechanisms are out there and it is important to use them. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Victimization</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Unlike the characters in <em>Fahrenheit 451,</em> violence and psychiatric disorders have no direct correlation in today’s society. The results of a 2006 survey showed that 60% of Americans felt people with schizophrenia would be violent and 32% thought someone with major depression would, but that has proven to be untrue (Harvard). This negative viewpoint can be caused by the misunderstanding and misinformation of these two illnesses. Schizophrenia has many positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms all affected by common risk factors (NAMI). Similar to that, there is a multitude of factors that contribute to mental disorders such as major depression ("Mental"). Just these two mental disorders alone are not causes of violence as they are often made out to be, there are a number of uncontrollable things that make one more susceptible to violence. Men are more likely to seem “angry and grouchy rather than sad and withdrawn” and often find it difficult to get help ("Men"). Repeat offenders, dual diagnoses, personality disorders, young people, and men are all more likely to be violent. Built up anger is a main cause of violence and “...may cause you to lose your temper and do reckless things” ("Negative").  Though even if a person obviously intends to be violent, the relative risk of them following through is “significantly influenced by [...] life circumstances and clinical factors” (Harvard). One of possible reasons for the previous statistic is how many people with mental illnesses are being victimized and made out to be bad people. Studies done in 2015 on mental illness and violence were published and reported that most violent crimes are committed by someone who is not mentally ill. They also found that those with a mental illness are victimized by these violent acts more than they commit violent acts. (Carroll). Violence being caused by mental disorders is incorrectly predicted in <em>Fahrenheit 451 </em>based on modern research. </div>]]></description>
