Increase: Conformity and group norms. If multiple people saw the person stealing tips then the others want to go with crowd and will say that the person took it. Also group norms are followed rules and one of those rules is to not steal and so the crowd would be more likely to help because the person was not following a group norm and they want to make sure that they do.
Decrease: Attribution theory and peripheral route of persuasion. People may see the man stealing as someone who accidentally left the money or had an excuse so they would be less likely to help and peripheral route of persuasion because if the person who stole the money is attractive they will be more likely to believe they did not steal the money

Increasing Helping Behavior:
People are willing to help rather than remain as bystanders in situations where there are others that have witnessed the situation as well. In the video, Megan was unwilling to back down and was able to elicit the support of almost half of the restaurant. When asked whether she was afraid of the argument breaking out into the fight, she even said that she was confident because she knew there were many around her who would be willing to step in and protect her. Another factor would be that the helper shares similarities with the victim. In the video, the man was adamant about speaking up because he was once a bus boy and knew how valuable tips were.

Decreasing Helping Behavior:
In large crowds, people often assume that someone else will speak out/take care of the situation so they back down. Another factor is when only that individual has witnessed the emergency and less people are willing to believe his or her account of what happened. This occurred
with one of the helper's when many in the restaurant didn't see the stealing and weren't willing to support the accuser.

Increase : When other people witness the crime or the incident and when it is reported there are more people to defend what happened. This is because when there are more people defending the situation, the people become more confident and stern with their view point. It is also increased if there are more people in the area such as the restaurant even if no one steps in to help. For example, the woman reported the money by herself but later said she felt safe because if she was attacked there would be 50 other people in the area to support her.

Decrease: when the individual reporting the incident is alone without any support to help defend their claim. This is because the individual will start seconding guessing themselves and be unsure if they are overreacting about the situation since they are alone and don't have another person to check their evidence. Another example is if the person is in an open area without any witnesses to support them if something were to happen.

People were more inclined to take better care of the dog because of how nice the owner was, because the owner was so sweet they would have felt guilty if they let her down. Also the fact that everyone at the cafe would see if they just gave away the dog makes them be more moral.
Decrease: If a person is very busy or preoccupied they may not pay very much attention to the dog and they might not notice if the dog is taken or have the time to run after it. When the person stealing the bike was black, people were more likely to call the cops and get angry and shout. The Psychologist in the video says this is because people automatically have a stereotype that black people steal and white people are good

Increase: If a witness had experience working hard for little money they would have an increased chance of speaking out because they understand that tips are hard earned money and it is wrong to steal them (former busboy who saw the theft). Helping behavior would also increase if many people saw the crime than just one person because they could back each other for support and their claim that somebody had stolen money would be justified because it would be many people's words against the person who stole the money.

Decrease: A decrease in helping behavior would occur if only one person saw the person stealing the tips because it would be harder for them to confront the thief or report the crime without others backing them up. Another reason a decrease in helping behavior would occur is if only one person saw the crime and was hesitant to report because they didn't know whether or not it actually was a crime. If they were wrong and the person wasn't actually stealing the money, then they would feel embarrassed.
