During IPGKBA's International day, I was given the opportunity to work behind the sushi food stall as one of my experiential learning in Japanese culture. The purpose of the sushi stall was to provide sushi-making experience to the customers and selling pre-made sushi. We had cooperated with IPGKBA's Japanese language club to set up the booth. There are four different types of fillings for the sushi which are tamago, crabmeat, sausage and cucumber. There were many people that want to create their own sushi, I even had the chance to taught other people how to roll their own sushi. It was thanks to Melissa for showing me the way to do so. The sushi rice ran out of stock twice because people were swarming at our booth to make their own sushi.I would like to thank Sensei for giving me this opportunity to be making sushi for the first time and I also want to thank Melissa for teaching me how to make sushi from scratch.

On International Languages Day, I was supposed to be assigned on MasterChef duty as a volunteer to help out organising the event. The purpose of the event was to facilitate international school pupils in preparing a meal using only the ingredients given on the cooking counter. However, Sensei Ang was kind enough to let Muizz, Ruby and I to lend some helping hands at the sushi stall, whereby the Japanese Language Club (JLC) were in charged in. The sushi stall main purpose was to sell four types of sushi, which contained cucumber, eggs, sausages and crabmeat. But, there were also another purpose for the stall, which was to introduce to the public about how to make your own personal sushi by themselves with the same ingredients used. Along the process, I have learnt so much.

I gave my gratitude to Melissa, the manager of the stall which is also one of the JLC members, who had taught me step-by-step on how to roll my own sushi. Despite busy filling up orders from many incoming customers, Melissa was patience of giving me how-to steps and tips. After a few attempts, I was able to produce the perfect sushi roll which was later bought by me. I was very thrilled that I was finally able to roll my own sushi in exchange for the experience that was given to me during the whole day. Making sushi was one of my bucket list, therefore it meant so much to me that I will make use of the experience I had and bring back home to my hometown to share among my family.

During the International Languages Day, I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot of new things. Before that, I would like to thank Ang Sensei for giving me this opportunity to try producing our sushi.

We started the day with seeing the demonstration to make sushi. I was quite late to the booth as I was busy in the hall with another errands. The moment I arrived at the booth, Muizz showed me how to make the sushi. It amazed that something so simple could have so many steps.

It was an amazing experience for me as I’ve always wanted to try making sushi since I was in high school. This opportunity helped me to bond with my friends and with my juniors. Due to lacking of help and materials, I had to do a lot work but it was okay because without hardwork, you will never get its fruit.

I hope this kind of event will be held again in the future so all ipbarians can join in and work together again.
