  • The objective of this article and its authors claim(states) that "Our research suggests that culture fundamentally shapes how people respond to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • "Collectivism (versus individualism) is characterized by the view of
    an interdependent (versus independent) self (5, 6). Collectivism
    captures “the tendency to be more concerned with the group’s
    needs, goals, and interests than with individualistic-oriented interests,”
    whereas individualism captures “the tendency to be more concerned
    with one’s own needs, goals, and interests than with group-oriented
    concerns” (7). People in collectivistic cultures are more likely to
    agree with statements like “I usually sacrifice my self-interest for the
    benefit of my group” and “My happiness depends very much on the
    happiness of those around me,” whereas people in individualistic
    cultures are more likely to agree with statements like “I often do my
    own thing” and “What happens to me is my own doing” 
The reason to include this article is due to the fact that over the course of the pandemic, the use of masks, along with social distancing, and many other restrictions humanity has faced, involves the cultural conventions of ones behavior/being. Before 2020, the use of medical masks were typically associated with/for medical use by professionals, health care workers, etc. Today, we associate face masks as something that were an everyday need where we could not leave the house without. This has become a solid example of cultural conventions/ collectivism that have the power to effect our everyday lives.

  • This is another important example of cultural conventions or collectivism due to the fact that cancel culture has the potential to disrupt America in particular, by creating a distrust in people. It also happens within a certain group of people with similar interests, that specifically look for something to critique and or criticize wether it be a famous person or important figures in the public eye. 
  • The people who feed on cancel culture where their objective is to potentially hex them out of the good graces of the public, these people feel as if they belong together by having this common interest in finding ways to cancel someone. These can also be known as 'haters' as well. 

  • It has caused a divide between cultures and to society because it takes a magnifying glass and examines any thing you say or write, and to pick apart something that does not DEFINE who you are as a person. 
  • We have seen so many celebrities that have been a 'victim' of cancel culture, needless to say that a majority of them may not be so innocent, but we also have seen alot of public figures who have an audience or following that has turned back on them for something they said or did. Because of cancel culture, we are more aware of what we say and how we say it as well as being more socially aware in our actions.

  • Comic-con as we know, is a popular culture convention where hundreds of thousands of characters come together and are celebrated where they can also interact with fans. This has become a well known convention that demonstrates the fascination behind pop culture 
  • "In recent years, Comic-Con has been a summertime mecca for fans as well as movie studios, TV networks and celebrities wanting to promote their biggest projects."
  • Last year, due to COVID-19 the in person convention was cancelled which left fans wondering if it will be back the following year, in person... 
  • This is more of a general/common example of cultural conventions in America that bring a certain kind of group together, whose opinions on the production of popular culture are relevant.
