The Normandy Landings were the landing operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War ll. Code named Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of German-occupied France (and later Europe) from Nazi control, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front.

Despite a massive planned assault on Soviet troops using heavy tanks, artillery and air power, postponements by German dictator Adolf Hitler gave the Soviets ample time to prepare for the onslaught. Ultimately, Germany’s plan to wipe out the Red Army once and for all failed, but not before both sides experienced heavy casualties.

Within hours the U.S claimed Kadena and Yontan airfields, but what they didn't know was Japan's 32nd Army was waiting for them. Soon the 32nd Army had the U.S troops right where they wanted them. In a rugged area known as Shuri Lieutenant General Matsuru Ushijima set up a triangular defense line. Else where other battles were fought. Both sides suffered tremendous lost within the two months of fighting. It started on December 16, 1944 and lasted until January 25, 1945. It took place in eastern Belgium, northeast France, and Luxembourg. It was a surprise attack and caught the allies off guard. The Germans took advantage of a weakly defended section of the allied lines, but the fierce resistance of the Americans held back the Germans long enough for backup to arrive. After the stormy weather improved, airstrikes were called against the German invaders. Overall, the Germans not only lost the battle, they also lost key resources (men, arms, vehicles, etc) that could never be replaced in the war. Winston Churchill declared this "the greatest American battle" and "an ever-famous American victory".
