Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me”. Matthew 19:21This relates to Caroline’s teachings and works as she helped, supported and cared for the women who didn’t have the facilities. She was well aware that it was good to serve others. . This bible passage most likely relates and inspires Caroline Chisholm's works and teachings as she did good by caring and helping for young women. Matthew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and his gospel is very significant. It was written in 80CE and contains a large number of Jesus' sayings and a group of stories that are not found in any other gospel.

Although she was particularly motivated by the parable of the Good Samaritan, Caroline felt that no person shall be discriminated so she reached out to all and created a charity to support the people who suffer from this. She followed the practices of the Catholic Church.

Caroline wanted to build a home for women in Sydney and she went to the government and said, “I would like a building to house these girls. I'm willing to work hard, assist in any way, give my time freely, provided such a home for young girls becomes a reality." In a letter written Ms Chisholm to 'Madam' in Kings Square, London, provides and gives advice to emigrants who have written to Caroline enquiring about the opportunities for the women working as teachers.

Church Responses that inspired Caroline.

The Catholic Church inspired and encouraged Caroline to spread her message to the community so she could reach out to those women and make a change. She was a prophet within the Catholic Church in articulating the same principles of social justice. This was not articulated until the encyclical Rerum Novarum written by Pope Leo XIII on the 5th of May 1891, fourteen years after her death. It translates in English to ‘revolutionary change’. Pope Leo then discusses the five key issues of private property, the right of the Church to speak on social issues, the role of the state, the worker’s right to a just wage, and the importance of worker associations. I believe that Caroline was inspired by the second issue of this encyclical which is the rights of the church to speak of social issues. This means that the church is calling out to people with social issues and help and serve for all of our community and I believe this strongly relates to her works and teachings.

Caroline bought many young girls together by speaking out and finding positions for the immigrant girls and sheltered many of them in her home. This was an incredibly generous and loving thing to do and this is the major reason why she became so significant.
