 What did snakes evolve from? Did they, or do they have legs, have they ever? 
      There is fossil evidence to say that snakes may have evolved from lizards that dig underground, like the varanids (or a group like it) during the Cretaceous Period. An early fossil snake relative, Najash rionegrina, was a two legged digging animal with a sacrum (bone in their back). Snakes do not have any shoulders, however they have the backbone that connects where the shoulders would be. 
     Snakes developed their lack of legs and dangerously sharp fangs over the course of 125 million years. A few other differences include their eye shape and their incredibly mobile skull. Another piece of evidence that snakes went through evolution is is the fact that their left lung is either gone or significantly smaller than the right lung. Some snakes have evolved to have flat tails, good for swimming; some, have began digging underground and using their no legs as an advantage. Also for burrowing purposes, snakes have evolved to have non external eyelids (so they wouldn't get scratched) and ears (so they could avoid getting dirt in their ears). Snakes have mutated so that their some fossil photos suggest that the snake used to appear close to the way a salamander would now, but, not a salamander. 
     The largest pre-evolution snake fossil was 49 feet long, implying that snakes used to be a lot bigger than they are today. There is no found information on why snakes began to get smaller, although scientists believe that it was due to there not being enough food for the animals being that large. 
 Two scientist suggest that the process of evolution in snakes that we had viewed previously was perhaps backwards? The evolution of snakes is not one in which there is an enormous amount of information.
