Mrs. Mallard had a heart condition, so everyone would basically tiptoe around her and treat her carefully. When her sister and family friend discovered that her husband was killed in an accident, they take time to gently tell Mrs. Mallard that he died. Mrs. Mallard started crying a lot, then goes to her room to get some alone time and locks the door. Inside, she seems terrified of some knowledge that's coming to her but knows it’s her freedom. Although she and her husband loved each other, and she is genuinely sad about his death, but she feels free for once. She realizes she is now able to live for herself. She, now, sees life in a different manner. She views it as a positive thing, rather than a negative one.

While Mrs. Mallard is having this epiphany, her sister keeps trying to check on her. After a while, Mrs.Mallard comes out of the bedroom, and she and her sister went downstairs. Suddenly, Mr.Mallard comes in who is not dead. Then Mrs. Mallard sees him in shock, and she has a heart attack and dies.

It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long."
