She has served the vast majority of this time in leadership positions at North Carolina universities, after beginning her career as patrol captain of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte police. In this position for 14 years, Dawn Tevepaugh oversaw the performance and development of the campus police force, in collaboration with other professionals at the university. Dawn Tevepaugh went on to serve as a patrol sergeant with the town police force in Davidson, North Carolina, where she cultivated strong ties with Davidson College and its law enforcement team. In 2009, she joined East Carolina University as its assistant chief of police and created innovative ways of maintaining campus safety while making effective use of resources. Subsequently named the chief of police for Guilford Technical Community College, Dawn Tevepaugh assigned personnel and made use of equipment in alignment with campus security goals. She moved on to Durham Technical Community College in 2014 as a police officer and advanced to the position of chief within a year.
