Throughout the year I have learnt a lot during my hip-hop classes. During TB1 we focused on grooves such as the bounce, the front rock and the back rock, which are a key foundation of the style. We also learnt social dances that make up the style and also created our own variations on them. This led to us putting these foundations into practice as we performed a hip-hop piece for our TB1 winter performance.

In TB2 we focused more on freestyle and using the foundations we learnt during TB1 to do this. For example, using the bounces and rocks in different directions and timings, as well as using social grooves in new and different ways. Freestyle is also being used in our TB2 performance.

Throughout the year my contemporary lessons have been very technique-focused, during TB1 we did lots of different exercises at the beginning of our lessons to strengthen our technique and improve our flexibility to help us become more comfortable with the style. These exercises included floor work to warm up and hip stretches. We also worked on moving across the floor, putting these techniques into practice.

During TB2 we continued doing these exercises and increasing their difficulty, as well as adding completely new ones. Also, some of the techniques that we learnt became a part of the end-of-year performance, freestyle is also utilised within the piece.

During TB1 we learnt two distinct West African styles of dance Kpanlogo and Azonto. We started by learning the different ways of moving your hips and chest to properly understand the style then we added moves on top of that. With both of these styles of dance, there is a more traditional style and a modern style. We learnt both and incorporated that into the Winter performance at the end of TB1. There was also an element of freestyle used in this piece.

During TB2 we expanded on this by continuing to learn more steps, and also splitting off into groups to create our own phrases, using the steps we learnt and doing them in unique ways. We also learnt some footwork from Nigeria to use within our end-of-year show.
