         <description><![CDATA[<div>Bay of Pigs Invasion: The United States attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro and his government. The invasion failed which lead way to the Cuban Missile crisis. Castro took thousands of US soldiers as prisoners but set them free in exchange for 53 million dollars worth of medicine and baby food. Cuba and the United States did not like each other and tensions were high. The US planned to assassinate Fidel Castro after their failed invasion.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1960, all Cuban assets on American soil were froze.<br><br>Cuba's main export was sugarcane so there economy was very reliant on it. The Soviets agreed to help financially aid Cuba by buying their sugarcane in exchange for Soviet oil.<br>In 1962, the US embargoed almost all of Cuban exports, including sugar.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Cuban Missile Crisis-<br>The Soviet's stored nuclear missiles on Cuban soil to avoid future American invasion of Cuba.<br>Kennedy announced a naval blockade to prevent the arrival of more missiles and demanded that the Soviets dismantle and remove the weapons already in Cuba.<br>President Kennedy and Prime Minister Khrushchev both realized the threat this had to their people so they had decided for the Soviet Union to pull their missiles out of Cuba and the US to pull theirs out of Turkey. This was the closest the US and Soviet Union had been to nuclear war during the Cold War. Tensions were extremely high.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cuba joined Comecon (a communist multinational organization founded by Stalin) in 1972.<br>Cuban social and economic planing closely resembled that of the Soviets. Cuban culture became similar to Soviet culture. <br>Bills where being passed to further make Cuba resemble the Soviet Union.<br>in 1976, Cuba wrote a new constitution that took effect. In December, Fidel Castro became the president of Cuba.</div>]]></description>

The end of the Soviet Union meant no more financial aid for Cuba so that negatively affected the Cuban economy.<br>In 1993, Cuba opened state enterprises to private investments.<br>Today Cuba is a single party, communist nation.</div>]]></description>
