President Kennedy and Prime Minister Khrushchev both realized the threat this had to their people so they had decided for the Soviet Union to pull their missiles out of Cuba and the US to pull theirs out of Turkey. This was the closest the US and Soviet Union had been to nuclear war during the Cold War.
