He was known for his ability to stay calm during intense situations and was given the nickname "<strong>U</strong>nconditional <strong>S</strong>urrender" Grant. </div>]]></description>

Ulysses came in during the time of reconstruction. He had to work to reunite the nation. During his campaign he focused on reconstruction, ratification of the 15th amendment, peaceful reconciliation between the North and the South, pardons for formal confederate leaders, and the protection of the civil rights of slaves.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

In 1839, when applying for West Point, the congressman who appointed Grant mistakenly believed his first name was Ulysses and his middle name was Simpson (his mother’s maiden name). Grant never amended the error and from then on he used Ulysses S. Grant as his real name. </div>]]></description>
