COMPARE AND CONTRAST: How does nonverbal communication differ between intrapersonal and interpersonal communication?

In nonverbal communication, we don't use our mouth to communicate but we use nonverbal cues instead such as hand gestures, facial expression, and posture or through sending messages. Intrapersonal communication on the other hand can be done with a person itself like self-talk, self-reflection, and self-esteem, while interpersonal communication involves two or more people in the process like phone calls, meeting, performing in a play, etc.

IMPACT OF CONTEXT: Imagine giving presentation to your classmates about scientific discovery. How would you approach differ if you were explaining the same concept to your younger sibling?

In order to explain the same concept to a younger sibling, make your content simpler such as simplifying the language or use basic explanation in a way you know that s/he can understand the concept but see to it that the thought is there. Also, you can use visuals for the younger sibling to help them understand or visualize complex ideas and concepts. The key is adjusting the complexity and depth of information to match the audience's age and knowledge level.

ETHICAL DILEMMAS: Social media platforms can blur the lines between public and interpersonal communication. Discuss potential ethical considerations when sharing an opinion on a sensitive topic online.

When sharing opinions on a sensitive topic online, see to it that you are accountable and responsible with the actions you will take and the words you will be uttering. You must respect and consider different perspectives and beliefs to avoid misinterpretations, fostering open and respectful conversation. Always do fact or background checking before giving your thoughts or opinions to avoid bias and consider the consequences.

Examples: Discrimination, bullying, public health measures

It is essential to be aware of these differences, show sensitivity and seek clarification when communicating.

1) Humor: What may be funny in one culture can be offensive or confusing in another. For instance, dark humor that is common in some cultures may be perceived as inappropriate in others. So it is very important that we must think wisely before we are uttering words, learn to control our emotions and our words.

Example: Dark humor- for some this is their coping mechanisms but for others it is off-limits.

2) Symbolism: Symbols and gestures that are considered appropriate and respectful in one culture may be misunderstood or deemed inappropriate in others. It underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness when communicating across different cultural contexts to avoid unintended offense or misinterpretation.

example: Elders are comfortable when the younger one is doing "mano" to them but to others some may interpret it diff

erently.
