Born in the Bronx of New York city and originated in the African American and Latino communities, breaking was a way for young people to express creativity, and resilience facing social and economic struggles. As DJs like Kool Herc began DJ-ing and experimenting with unique beats, dancers created explosive acrobatic moves. Soon this turned into a nationally and globally recognized culture through movies and shows, music and breaking battles.

From Street to Stage: The Evolution of Breakdancing Culture

Breakdancing: History and foundational elements

The VHS Era

The above video is not about me but was sure a nice addition to the collection.

While a lot of people think that this was the first VHS that was launched in the late 70s, believe it or not, it was not.

The tapes in the image are smaller than those I used to rent movies and watch them on. I remember the first time my father took me to the video store to rent a movie, the staff there recommended for us to rent Star Wars. It was the first film I ever rented. Back then the movie store was full of people, though it was about half the size of a standard 7Eleven store, it was full of movies and posters, VHS all over the shelves. It was my first time there, and I got hooked!

My father used to bring us a couple of movies for the weekend, or when my sister and I get good grades in school. But when I was about 13 years old, every few days I would go to the store to rent films that have posters with the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan with his Kung-Fu, Jaws, and never to forget, The Godfather. I am not sure if there was anything called Pop Culture back then, however, am glad that it became what it is today because I truly enjoyed Star Wars and the Japanese Godzilla.

Until today, am attracted to clothing that I can wear mainly around the house with references to various popular culture icons. T-shirts and sweaters with a page from Marvel Comics with dialogue, Star Wars funny memes of Darth Vader. My school backpack has pop culture referenced pins, from Street Fighter and Pulp Fiction, or logos of Atari and Sega "Sega, It's In The Game" Quote from 1994 release!
