Background During December 2000 Rotherham MBC in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund purchased Canklow Woods from the Duke of Norfolk for £135,000 (Heritage Lottery Fund £101,000 and RMBC £34,000). Canklow Wood is an ancient woodland that is one of the most important woodland types in Great Britain. It has been woodland for over four hundred years and is also the home of an ancient scheduled monument, which could date back 1000 years. Also, it is an important landmark, valuable to a wide range of wildlife and is popular for walkers. Sadly, the site suffered extensive tree clearance around 1920 and opportunities to encourage the area to recover naturally have been missed. Also, inappropriate access and recreation has created a number of problems. Motorbike scrambling, vandalism and fly tipping deter visitors from returning. Soil erosion caused by a proliferation of paths is placing the future of an ancient monument of national importance and valuable wildlife at serious risk. The plan aims to rationalise and improve access, together with enhancing the structure and appearance of the woodland. This includes coppicing and selective tree removal to give more space for the remaining trees and to benefit wildlife. Site improvements will allow disabled access to parts of the wood. Waymarked walks and access controls will help to reduce any conflict between different user groups and protect archaeology and nature conservation interests. Local people will be actively encouraged to become involved in the care of the woodland, especially in ways of reducing the amount of tipping of rubbish. Indeed, an important feature of the plan is the linking of a further Heritage Lottery Fund Award to develop education and interpretation programmes for local schools and communities. This includes an education pack and a range of events to encourage a better understanding of the site. All this will be supported by a website (www.heritagewoodsonline.co.uk) and this will be regularly updated. It has been produced jointly between colleagues in Education, Culture and Leisure Services and the South Yorkshire Forest Project team using material from the Canklow Wood Management Plan.
