The puritans believed that god would control what happened to people. Good, and bad, the puritans believed all things was gods will, and done by his power. This is shown in their writings describing near tragedy. one time this is shown is when the young man fell and almost drowned. “but it pleased god that he caught hold of the topsail halyards.” To the writer of this quote from "of Plymouth Plantation". William Bradford took advantage of these close calls to preach that its gods will.

The Puritans appear to only write to inform on, and document what was their lives consisted of. Their writings show that their culture didn't consist of the need for entertainment. This is shown in the entirety of their writing. Compared to most literature found today, the puritain writing examples seem dull and boring. This is because it is just documenting the basics of mportant events, and their lifestyle.

The religious Writings/sermons were wrote in order to scare the reader into trying to live a as close to perfect life as possible. Also to do whatever it would take to appease god, and coincidentally benefit the leaders of the religion. Although this seems like a disgrace to the religion it worked due to the hash content. This is shown when Jonathan Edwards states "The God that holds you over the pit of hell much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over a flame, abhors you and is dreadfully provoked".
