India became an independent republic in 1947 after having been occupied by the British Empire since 1858. Since the independence, India has been a democracy with no official state religion. More than 80 per cent of the population, however, are Hindu. Some of the most important challenges for India are the widespread corruption and poverty. The country has one of the largest economies in the world but, because of its enormous population, it is also one of the poorest countries on Earth. While death from starvation has become rare, malnutrition is still widespread, and in some areas, people still lack access to clean drinking water. The poorly functioning sewage system is a huge problem causing serious health problems.

India is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world, home to countless castes, tribes, religions, and sects. For almost all Indians, the family is the most important social unit. There is a strong tradition for living in extended families where the young married couple share a house and finances with their parents and grandparents. Almost all marriages are arranged by family elders on the basis of caste, degree of kinship, economic status, education, and astrology.
