I chose to look at Bay City Public Schools for my district and their community services. I noticed from browsing the website they have resources for both students and parents in separate sections, as well as a variety of resources through the website.

Why are these resources helpful? PARENTS

Parent section:

In the parent section, I noticed there were resources that related to bullying, volunteer opportunities, enrollment opportunities, medical information, etc. This was truly an online hub where parents could go to get further information on a variety of topics. This is helpful because it allows parents to have direct access to a plethora of information in regard to their student(s). Additionally, it allows for improved communication between faculty and families.

Additionally, BCPS has a variety of resources for their students. These resources include, curriculum, start and end times, bullying resources, codes of conduct, etc. These resources are helpful -- especially at the high school level -- because it allows the student to navigate life as a student. So often we expect the parents to do everything, but having an area for students to go and get information on their own allows for students to feel a sense of responsibility.

As a future educator and mandated reporter, knowing and understanding disproportionality and disparity is crucial.

Disproportionality is the over -- or under-representation of a certain group of people.

Disparity is a discrepancy or imbalance of services and outcomes.

In the video, it was said that "In child welfare, we consider the experience of children of one race or ethnicity to those of another and find disparities in the likelihood and type of placement, length of stay, and permanency outcomes".

It is crucial to understand what you are dealing with as a mandated reporter. In the video, it was also stated that African American children are often more exposed to abuse allegations than caucasian children. -- Ensure that you have reasonable cause to report the abuse of a child!

I would use a variety of aspects from this source. The aspect of this source I could most see myself using is the section titled "Politics is a Force Multiplier". As an elementary educator, I could see myself using this section most to express to parents the importance of keeping your young children out of political conversations. In this section of the article it said that during the 2016 election, there were Kindergarten students saying things like "Trump Sucks" or "Yay Trump". Comments like these create a divided classroom and there should not be a divide amongst politics in an elementary classroom. Additionally, if a parent comes in to discuss the child, politics should not be brought into the conversation. Using this section of the article to inform parents that I do not feel comfortable talking politics, could be beneficial in my future career for setting boundaries.

After reading through the social justice standards, the standard that most stuck out to me was DI.K-2.6 "I like being around people who are like me and different from me, and I can be friendly to everyone."

At a young age it is important teach kindness, and treating everyone with kindness whether they are the same as you, or different from you. This standard offers an example scenario as well, the example they used was the student had 2 moms, there was an open line of communication where the other student was able to ask questions and be curious but in a kind way.
