The Puritans refer to the movement for reform, which occurred in the Church of England. The Puritans didn't like the Church of England because they believed it didn't help keep and maintain a pure religion and sought to get rid of the Catholic Church. Once King Charles ll began to rule, he began to persecute puritans causing them to leave for the new world in 1620 as shown in the image below. This started the new settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Calvinism, the protestant theological system of John Calvin(pictured below) and his successors, which develops Luther's doctrine of justification by faith alone. They emphasize the grace of God and the doctrine of predestination. Calvinism believed in total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, grace, City Upon Hill theory, and education. many of these beliefs were shared with the Puritans. Calvinism believed in Satan which added a fear of the practices of witch craft.

In Salem, they believed anything negative or bad that is happening in the world is caused by Satan and that he is active and well. During the times of troubles such as, the wars with the Indians ad the strife in Salem village really had them convinced that Satan was active. They believed that the witches and wizards were recruited to serve Satan. They say that those who were afflicted by witchcraft would exhibit certain symptoms . The accusations really sparked when Tibitua began here foreign influence which began the teenage girls accusations, which is believed that they did it only out of boredom. When accused, you were forced to confess even if you weren't a witch. In the picture below, it shows the people terrified and in shock as a man is on the ground in pain and be affected by the "witches presence."

The Salem Witch Trials

It all started when Betty Paris became ill and began having delusions and late, more girls experienced the same weird behavior and when they saw a doctor, he believed it was the devil taking over. By 1692, over 200 were jailed and accused. Once the hysteria began, 19 men and women were hung and all had been convicted. They were tortured and killed when they wouldn't confess or the they wouldn't answer when asked if they were a witch. I believe the trials were a big part of our history. They were gone about in a very wrong and harsh way. It included unnecessary torture among innocent people. In the picture below, it shows how harshly they treated the accused.
