Self-selection may play a role in the pay gap. Other preferences also may factor into this. For instance, women who choose to stay at home and care for their children or focus on volunteer work may result in a wage gap. However, it is becoming more common for men to do this, as well. This may help close the wage gap as time goes on. Changing norms may also cause women to opt into currently predominantly male occupations.

Self-selection definitely has an impact on the pay gap. For instance, the maintenance occupations industry is mostly employed with men. This inequality will result in women to be paid less on average, as the industry is already compromised of men who are skilled in the industry. With a precedent of that industry being occupied by men who are already skilled in that industry, women who are not trained in maintenance occupations will be seen differently at the entry level and as a result, be paid less.
