The two meet up in a ruined church, and Winston realizes Julia doesn't care for an all out rebellion. She just wants to enjoy what she gets out of her small rebelling. Then he tells her about his ex-wife, and a story comes up where he had a chance to kill her. He says it wouldn't matter if he had or if he didn't, since in the end, nothing would have changed.

In an earlier chapter, Winston found a place in the second floor of the shop where there was a bed, and a framed engraving of an old church, and other commodities that intrigued him. He thought of renting the place out. Now came the time where he invited Julia to come and spend time together there. Once the two get talking, more differences between the two come to light. Winston feels as though he is just stalling out his inevitable death, while Julia sees it as "we aren't dead yet, so why mourn?"

The couple meets up at the second floor of the shop again where Julia shows the benefits of her following the rules, real coffee, bread, and sugar. She then reveals she also has make-up. She puts it on and Winston can see how it defines her features. The two of them "boink", and Winston admires the serenity of this imaginary life where he could wake up with his wife by his side, in a peaceful day. He imagines this life remains inside of his coral paperweight.

When Winston goes to work, he realizes Syme disappeared. His name was wiped from his chess meet-up thing, and no one spoke of him anymore. Later on, Winston continues to think about the room above the shop. He imagines scenarios where him and Julia could be free to express their love, but it's just a fantasy. Then in another meet up, he tells her about his feeling about O'Brien. She doesn't care much for rebellion, another reminder of the different ways they show their desire for change

Winston's suspicion of O'Brien was shown to be true, as the man secretly invited him to go to his apartment sometime. Since you can't really get the address of someone in that society, O'Brien made sure their exchange was done in front of a telescreen to make sure no one was suspicious of them meeting. Julia and him go to his house and O'Brien turns off the telescreen, showing he privileges of being inner party. He smokes fine cigars, and even shares wine with them as they talk about the brotherhood. He essentially tells them that they will do random actions that will contribute to the rebellion's success, and it is likely they will never see the fruits of their actions. Then while O'Brien asks questions, the two confess they wouldn't be okay with being separated from each other. O'Brien just says he is glad they told him the truth. Then the meeting ends

He remembers how he was a greedy kid who took food from his little sister and mother. The last time he saw them, he stole a ration of chocolate from his little sister and ran out of their home. When he returned, the two of them were gone.
